Thomas Hoagland
Professor of Animal Science,
University of Connecicut
Thomas A. Hoagland has been a member of the Animal
Science faculty since the fall of 1981. His expertise is in the
area of livestock production. He has specialized in reproductive
physiology. He is the Vice President of the Northeastern Branch of
the American Society of Animal Science. He has served as the
Chairman of the Physiology Section of the National Meeting of
ASAS and as the Meeting Chairperson of the Northeast ASAS Meeting.
His research has focused on ways to improve the
efficiency of live stock production.
Recently, collaborating with a team of faculty
from the University of Connecticut, he has helped to create
transgenic animals. He has been instrumental in a collaboration
with industry to further the knowledge base of xenotransplantation.
He has been active with a second group of faculty who are
interested in improving livestock growth. This group interacts
with industry and has approached this subject in new and creative
ways.
Dr. Along with Drs. Cameron Faustman and John Risesen
of the Animal Science Department and Dr. Lynn Z. Bloom of the
English Department, Dr. Hoagland has begun a program to improve
the instruction of writing in the Agricultural Sciences.
This program is funded by sources from the USDA and provides
workshops for the College of Agricultural Sciences and the
University. Currently, a handbook is being developed with the
help of Kimberly Freeman, a graduate student in English who is
working on the writing project.
