Preparing Outgoing Mail

Mail is processed for all University Departments and registered organizations with assigned FRS account numbers which must appear on all outgoing mail for charge back purposes.

When addressing envelopes, please remember that the upper right hand corner of the envelope or parcel is reserved for postage only. Please do not place any classification or address information in this corner. Each piece of outgoing mail, letter, flats and parcels, must carry the following information:

Domestic Mail:
* UCONN ONLY-COMPLETE RETURN ADDRESS
including Unit number in upper left corner. Place FRS account number above return address.

  • DESTINATION ADDRESS
    • Name of Recipient
    • Information/Attention Line
    • Street Address or Delivery Line
    • City, State, and Zip +4
Foreign Mail:
* RETURN ADDRESS (Same as above)
  • DESTINATION ADDRESS
    • Name of Recipient
    • Information/Attention Line
    • Street Address
    • Recipient's province/Postal Code
    • Country name, spelled in English
*NO ABBREVATIONS.

Foreign countries also impose various restrictions. It is recommended that when
mailing questionable items to US or Foreign destinations, the mailer should call
University Mail Services for assistance.

You will receive the best service possible on all categories of mail if you:

  • Capitalize everything in the address
  • Use common abbreviations
  • Eliminate all punctuation
  • Use 2 letter STATE abbreviations
  • Use Zip + 4 Codes

Make sure the place where you want the mail delivered appears on the line
immediately above the City, State and Zip Code line; i.e., 123 W MAIN STREET,
SUITE 400 or PO BOX 125, BUT NOT BOTH ON THE SAME LINE.

Labels for use on parcels, packages or large envelopes must be addressed
according to RECOMMENDED FORMAT. Improperly prepared labels will be returned to
you for correction and/or completion.
