Evelyn Hu-DeHart, Director of The Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity
in America and Professor of History, will give a major address to celebrate
the 10th Anniversary for Asian American Cultural Center and Asian American
Studies Institute at UConn. Reception following. This event is open to

Thursday February 19, 2004
Day of Remembrance at UConn is an annual event to mark the internment
of Japanese Americans during World War II as a notable moment in the history
of the United States. In 2004, we will explore the theme of music in the
camps, and the idea of music as a way to rise above the injustice and
the heartache, and a way to celebrate the strength and resilience of the
Japanese American community's spirit that may have bent but did not break
during that dark time in America. Multi-media Presentation by George Yoshida,
who wrote Reminiscing in Swingtime: Japanese Americans in American
Popular Music, 1925-1960.

Saturday April 24, 2004
Compassion and Conflict Resolution will be addressed at the Second Annual
Mahavir Ahimsa Seminar. The Keynote Address will be delivered by the world-renown
author and teacher, Gurudev Chitrabhanu, who will speak on the principle
and practice of compassion. A panel on nonviolent conflict resolution
through negotiation, mediation/arbitration, and an interfaith discussion
will comprise the afternoon program. This event is open to the public.

Fred Ho Fellowship in Asian
American
Politics & Culture to be Awarded Annually
The Fred Ho Fellowship will
be awarded annually to a faculty member, doctoral candidate or independent
scholar who has a demonstrated research interest in the Fred Ho Collection,
housed in the Dodd Research Center at UConn. The Fred Ho Fellow is required
to give a public lecture, and to reference the collection in his or her
published works. Applicants for the fellowship are eligible for an award
of up to $1000 to be used for travel and accommodations. Applications
are judged on the significance and cogency of the proposed research, the
applicant's scholarly research credentials, letters of support attesting
to the value of the proposed research, and the appropriateness of the
Fred Ho Collection to the research.
