Usha Palaniswamy received her Ph.D. in Plant Science from the University of Connecticut. In 2002, she received the Teaching Innovation Excellence Award from the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). And in 2001, she was awarded a two-year, Graduate Research Assistantship for "Design and development of culturally-based Breast Cancer Awareness and Early Detection Educational Programs for Asian Indians."

Research Interests and Works in Progress include critical health issues of Asian Americans in the United States; Asian traditional medical systems; Asian medicinal plants; and human issues in horticulture. Her research focuses on phytochemicals that promote human health and prevent diseases. CPL Press based in the United Kingdom will publish her book Purslane: A Guide to Medicinal Plants of Asian Origin and Culture in 2002.
