The links under Handout, Quiz, and Answer to Quiz lead you to a pdf file.

  • Learn about Adobe Reader, or
  • Try xpdf.
  • These pdf files require Japanese fonts. If you do not have them installed on your computer, you might be lead to an automatic installation procedure. If you are connecting from a public computer such UConn's, you can try a Macintosh since it will perhaps have Japanese fonts pre-installed.

If you can tell me how to embedded the fonts into the pdf files, it is greatly appreciated.

  • Textbook: Yasu-Hiko Tohsaku (2004) Yookoso!: An Invitation to Contemporary Japanese: Media Edition, 2/e. McGraw-Hill. ISBN 0.07.286213.0.
  • Dictionaries

  • There is a glossary at the end of the textbook. Use this whenever you encounter a word that you do not know or you are not sure about.
  • If you want to use an online English-Japanese dictionary and have Japanese fonts, or if you want to use a Japanese-English one and can further input Japanese, use this site:
    eejiroo on the web
It is a web version of the best electronic dictionary in Japan, created by professional translators.
  • If the condition of your computer does not meet the above condition, you may also want to look up a word at an online dictionary such as
    Jeffrey's Japanese/English Dictionary Server.
Although this dictionary has large vocabulary and is the best online dictionary that I could find so far that does not require Japanese fonts or input method, there are obvious mistakes, so use it for reference and do not rely on it too much.
