Laboratory Syllabus for MCB 229, Spring 2004

Note: Labs begin the second week of classes, starting on Monday, January 26. All labs meet in TLS 207.

A. MATERIALS NEEDED.
You will need the following items for each laboratory period, all available at the UConn Co-op. Be sure to bring them to the first lab and thereafter.
1. Laboratory Manual MCB 229 Fundamentals of Microbiology, Revised January, 2004.
2. A Photographic Atlas for the Microbiology Laboratory, 2nd Edition, 1999, Leboffe & Pierce. Morton.
3. Wax marking pencils or indelible felt tip pens (blue only). You will need these to mark glassware in every lab. Avoid water soluble inks.
4. A 3-ring binder for laboratory manual and notes.
5. A lab coat. The Co-op has inexpensive disposable lab coats that will last all semester. Mark your coat prominently with your name, and store it in the drawer of your lab bench.

B. GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR LABORATORIES:
1. Check the schedule of lab activities and read the assigned exercises in the lab manual and the related material in A Photographic Atlas for the Microbiology Laboratory (PAML) carefully before coming to lab. Background reading in the textbook (use the index) will often be helpful.
2. Be aware of the timing of incubations. Occasionally you will need to return outside of the scheduled lab period to end an incubation and record data. Plan ahead for these situations as indicated in the schedule. Bacteria grow quickly, and it is often important to record results within a day or so of the completion of growth.
3. Attend the lab section for which you are registered! All sections are full to capacity, so there is no space for you to attend a different lab section. If you miss a lab due to illness or other extenuating circumstance, or know in advance that you will be unable to attend your scheduled lab on a particular date for compelling reasons, ask your TA if it is possible for you to attend a different lab section that same week.
4. Lab Reports are due at the beginning of lab the week after you have completed data collection. Late reports will lose points, as explained by your TAs.
