This course introduces students to the basic practice of science on the “social” sides of psychology, including the epistemology of empiricism, the logic of experimental design including threats to internal validity, some introduction to a wide variety of dependent measures, ethical issues in the conduct of research on humans, concerns about external validity and critiques of science, and scientific writing. The usual assignments are reading 3-4 articles per week and writing a 2-page commentary, several small exercises in research methods, and a research proposal with oral presentation to the class. The class is open to all first year students in social and I/O psychology; other students must obtain permission of the instructor.
