Dr. Young's research concerns Situated Cognition as a theory for understanding how people think and learn, and focuses primarily on how educational technology can enhance thinking and learning. Research on assessment using Log Files (dribble files) from multimedia hypertext has been supported by Spencer Foundation. Dr. Youngs work and research combine an emphasis on theory from cognitive science and educational psychology with development activities applying the latest instructional technologies. The GEEWIS project (funded by NSF, T. Torgersen, co-PI) combines authentic work in water quality with the use of authentic data via the Internet. He contributed to UConn's successful Internet II proposal, and in cooperation with his graduate students has ongoing research concerning Jasper videodiscs, motivation from a situated cognition perspective, and mindful engagement in the Jason Project. Prior research inlcudes weekly ATM-switch-based broadcasts to local 4th graders concerning University doctoral dissertation work in Physics, the PIES project. AERA 2001 featured a paper (under review) describing our ongoing investigations of future teachers' misconceptions about technology. Please participate in this ongoing research via:our Online Misconceptions survey, of teacher miconceptions. AERA 2002 features a presentation on anchored instruction in the GEEWIS project. |
