President James Rock brought the meeting to order at 6:37 p.m.
Secretary Alton Van Dyke's minutes of August 19, and September 16, 2002 were accepted as printed and mailed.
Alton then read current correspondence with highlights as follows:
The UConn Foundation is soliciting donations for the 4-H account. A motion was passed to donate $100.
The UConn Block & Bridle Club is soliciting sponsorship for the Little International Livestock Show on October 26. A motion was passed to donate $60.00 to sponsor two classes: Poultry Showmanship and 4-H/FFA Poultry.
Jim Rock and Jerry Srednicki will attend the 3rd Annual Leaders' Forum sponsored by the UConn College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. They will represent the CT poultry interests.
The AEB Caucus is over and our own Joe Fortin has been selected as an Alternate.
The US Egg and Poultry Association is offering a preregistration incentive for the International Expo in Atlanta this year. You save the cost of registration.
Jim Rock sent a letter to UConn supporting Mazhar Khan's promotion to full professor.
Jim also sent a letter of thanks to Ray Crossen for his presentation at the last meeting regarding his former proposed dressing plant at the Hartford Regional Market.
Treasurer Robert Feldman's report of October 23, 2002 was accepted as read.
Jim gave a current overview on the farm occupancy situation and farms with equipment for sale.
Discussion ensued on where to go from here relative to a dressing plant. It was decided to wait and see what Dave Carey, Hartford Regional Market Administrator, can come up with in the old records. We don't believe that the Market's Charter had been amended to allow a dressing plant.
Mike Darre reported that lots of pamphlets and omelets were distributed at the "Big E" on September 21 & 22, 2002. They also distributed all of their 250-plus teacher packets.
Mike also reported a steady flow of people at UConn's Cornucopia on September 29.
Mike reported disappointing vendor sales, including the UConn Poultry Club's egg omelets, at this year's Ag Expo. Part of the problem may be that with the vastly larger floor space than that of the State Armory, people were more spread out. We need a chicken or egg suit for next year to create an attraction to the booth.
Bud reported that the location for the next dessert recipe contest is under negotiation and will be decided by the next meeting.
Things are quiet in Connecticut. Some small flock owners are calling UConn for disease information but few are bringing birds in for post-mortem examination. The current cost of $40.00 per case may be a deterring factor.
Three Southern California counties have been affected by Exotic Newcastle Disease. Of 39 quarantined premises, six were infected, with 5,500 birds being destroyed.
Mazhar is working with Mike to link a poultry health web site to the CPA web site.
A student has been updating the CPA web site. More information and input is needed from CPA members.
Mike and Jim are working on the North Atlantic Poultry Health and Management Conference, March 25-27, 2003, Portsmouth, New Hampshire. They still need more ideas and speakers.
The planning committee for the Risk Management for Poultry Producers Seminar met and rated topics by interest and importance. Joe Bonelli, Norm Bender, and Jim Rock will now set up the seminar.
The CPA resolutions were presented and accepted at the New London County Farm Bureau meeting. Larry presented them at Tolland County and Frank Manfreda, Jr. is presenting them this evening at Windham County.
A motion was passed to spend $150 for a trade booth at the Annual Connecticut Farm Bureau meeting on November 15 & 16. Jim is a voting delegate and Gary Proctor will attend as well.
A motion was passed to reverse a motion made earlier this year. The CPA will now continue to invite, and pay for a meal, for spouses/guests of CPA Annual Meeting/UConn Poultry Day presenters, egg artists and egg dessert recipe contest winners.
Larry is looking at early June dates for the Annual Meeting to be held at Zenny's Restaurant, Mansfield. Recipe winners, the egg artist and last year's UConn egg research presenters will be invited. We need to solicit sponsors for guest meals and to off set other costs.
The next CPA Board of Directors' Meeting will be on Wednesday, December 11, 2002, at 6:30 p.m. at The Main Street Cafe, Willimantic.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m.
