2. Briefly describe the commercial or provide a copy of the ad.
3. Critically assess the impact of this type of advertising on women. In addition to sexism, see if there are examples of racism, elitism, ageism, and/or heterosexism apparent in the selected ad? How might this contribute to attitudes that lead to violence against women?
4. Think about how some of the issues covered in readings, films, and class discussions are demonstrated by this presentation of women in the ads.
5. Get the name and address of the company responsible for creating such sexist material. Do research to find the name of the appropriate person to whom you should direct a complaint.
6. Write a letter to the head of the company that produced the advertisement you have chosen to analyze. Explain the connections you see between the presentation of this product and negative attitudes and/or effects on women. Decide if you believe that this particular ad reflects current trends or influences them. Think about who benefits and who is hurt by this portrayal? Formulate an argument for your position.
7. Write a persuasive letter intended to convince the person responsible to stop such forms of sexism. Recommend what you think could be done to improve the way in which this product is advertised so that it might benefit women (who comprise more than half the consumers in our society).
You may e-mail your response or you may turn in your paper during class.
