If you are an English/Humanities major wondering about your next fifty years, you should be looking into an internship. An internship can be the bridge between part time and summer work and a career. This University has several good internship programs, but English 297: The Writing Internship is tailored especially for Humanities and English majors.

The Writing Internship puts you in a professional environment, working with professional writers on real-life problems. Current placements include positions in a museum, a newspaper, a publishing house, an advertising agency, a software company, a technical magazine and a variety of other businesses and organizations that employ writers and editors. Positions are available both on or off campus, and the internships are available in spring, fall, and summer programs worth from one to six credits.

In your internship, you will learn writing skills not taught in our creative writing or our W-courses. While these skills require attention and practice, they are not difficult to learn and they are the key to getting paid for your writing.

You will also make friends who will keep you in mind when they learn of career opportunities, and you will leave with a folder of professional work which you can present to interviewers.

You must be a junior or a senior to qualify for the program. Priority is given to English majors, but first come, first served.
