Newstand

Besides our weekly readings in issues in technology, you should keep abreast of the newest developments in the computer and technology worlds. They will affect you. Be able to discuss the news in class and/or on the discussion list. You may also use them as sources for papers and as material for class assignments.

I am always looking to expand this page. If you find a good site, e-mail me.

On-line Newspapers

On-line Technology Magazines

  • Internet.Com. Internet.com has an impressive first page index of resources: news, technology, world wide web news, commerce, and general internet resources.

  • MacAddict. One of my top picks for the on-line MacIntosh magazines. Like PC Week, PC World, and Wired, MacAddict also comes in the old-fashioned print form. The site includes daily news, technical help, and links to other Mac sites.

  • MacCentral On-Line includes MacIntosh and Internet news.

  • EWeek. EWeek's site is very thorough, handling both breaking news and providing direction for other computer needs. Story subjects range from software reviews to e-commerce. There is also a link to a news archive that goes back about a week; there's also a search engine.

  • PC World. Sections include news, reviews, the Web, how-to, and a link to the current issue on newsstands. A very busy page graphically, it takes time to load, but there's a wealth of information here.

  • SlashDot. The site bills itself as "news for nerds." Heavily technical, but very thorough.

  • Wired Magazine On Line. Wired has traditionally been a magazine more geared toward techie (if not geeky) men; still, it's bleeding-edge technology and gaming news keeps it at the top of most (non-alphabetical) lists.

News from Overseas

  • BBC News: Sci/Tech Page. This site offers a view from the other side of the pond. Not all of the news here is computer and internet related, but some is, and they even have a special Internet correspondent.

  • Interface 2000. A technology paper put out by the folks at the London Times. They call it a "high tech supplement" to the normal paper.

  • Japan Times Techno Times. This section of the Japan Times seems to be a weekly, but the stories from previous weeks are archived along the side of the site. Stories are not limited to happenings in Japan.

  • The People's Daily On-Line. A Chinese newspaper produced by the government. High tech news can be found under business and sci-edu. Considering the Chinese government's stance on issues such as censorship, one can only wonder how objective or accurate their reporting is.

  • SiliconIndia. More extensive than IndiaLine, this site has tech stories from India and elsewhere arrangedby type (tech, analysis, etc.).

Gaming News and Reviews

According to my colleague Jim Scannell, gaming drives technology innovation. That's why sites that review and preview games also have to talk about hardware and software developments, especially in graphics. The area of Internet multi-player gaming is also exploding and is discussed on the gaming sites.

  • Dreamcast.ign.com. Not only for the Sega Dreamcast machine but for Nintendo, Playstation, and PC games. The site also includes reviews, previews, news, and cheat codes.

  • Game Spot. A mainstream site that offers a wide range of reviews and previews with a few feature length articles. Recommended by Jim Scannell.

  • Thresh's Firing Squad. Probably Jim Scannell's favorite game site. Thresh is the world champion Quake player, but he has a talented staff writing reviews of games and hardware. You'll find in-depth reviews of Athlon CPUs and special cooling fans for people who like to overclock their processors (like Jim, who crashed his hard drive that way). Also contains links to message boards concerning hardware questions.

  • VoodooExtreme. The site includes links with short abstracts to all the most current gaming news and reviews on the WWW and is updated around the clock. According to Jim, the site has a sense of humor and the site moderator is not in fact a former '70s porn star (don't blame me; I just report the news).

Other On-Line Sources

  • Backwire.com. Not only has the news, but will send it to your e-mail address. They cull their news stories from other respected sites, many of which are already on this page.

  • C|Net's News Site. This site's opening screen gives a few headlines, but a list on the side gives a generous number and variety of categories of technology news to browse. The weekend edition contains the very handy "One Week View" section which gives you the headlines for the week and the even handier "Week in Review" section on the weekends which sums up the tecnology news of the week. On the whole, one of the best tech news sites.

  • Also check out C|Net's Television Web Page, a companion to its interesting television show. You can click on links to read about the feature stories in this week's show.

  • IDG.net provides top news stories in the tech world, as well as reviews. The CNN Computing Section often uses IDG stories as a source.

  • NPR On-Line. Like CNN.com, NPR On-Line originated as a broadcast medium. You can get tech news in the News section by clicking on High Tech in the side menu. You can even listen to the news through streaming audio. The news stories, like news stories in audio and television broadcasts, seem to be very short.

  • Yahoo!'s Technology Headlines. A fairly mainstream listing of headlines, with links to the full stories.
