TEACHING NAVIGATION STRATEGIES


Teaching With the Internet:
Joe Montero's Class

• Joe Montero organized a workshop activity, using Nasa for Kids. This activity developed Internet navigation strategies as it introduced a unit on space exploration during the first week of school. NASA has such wonderful resources for teachers available on the Internet, including:

  • Send Your Name to Mars
  • NASA Quest
  • • In addition to the NASA site, take a look at the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) site. It provides more pictures about deep space to students.

    • Joe loaded a plug-in from the Internet called Adobe Acrobat Reader.

    • He was teaching his students navigation strategies at the beginning of the year. He used Yahooligans and Ask Jeeves for Kids, search engines that screened selections for child appropriateness.

    • His district used a filter program as part of its child safety strategy. The district based their policy on one they located at a site organized by the Houston Independent School District, Acceptable Use Policies .
