Donald J. Leu
Donald J. Leu holds the John and Maria Neag Chair in Literacy and Technology at the University of Connecticut.
He started his teaching career in the Peace Corps, teaching English as a Second Language. Later, he taught in the Bay Area
of California where he also worked as a reading specialist. Don completed his Masters degree at Harvard in Reading and Human
Development and his Ph.D. at Berkeley in Language and Literacy. He is the author of more than 100 books, articles, and software
in literacy education and electronic learning environments. He is a frequent speaker on new literacies, having lectured at Harvard
and Berkeley as well as keynote addresses in Europe, Australia, Asia, South America, and North America. Don is President-Elect
of the National Reading Conference on Research in Language and Literacy. He enjoys flyfishing, backpacking, and spending time
with his family.
Deborah Diadiun Leu
Deborah Diadiun Leu began her teaching career as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Marchall Islands of Micronesia.
Her passion has always been working in the classroom to help her students become more proficient in English and
literacy. Over the years, she has worked with many populations of English Language Learners (ELL) including
elementary and middle school students, immigrants, and language teachers. For the last twenty years at Syracuse University's
English Language Institute, she taught international university students and business professionals using a variety of
electronic media. She has given presentations on this topic at a number of conferences and forums. Deborah has
received her Masters degree in Linguistics and English as a Second Language from Syracuse University. Recently retired, she
looks forward to reading, exploring new cultrues, and spending time with family and friends.
Julie Coiro
Julie Coiro is a certified teacher with eight years of classroom teaching experience and a Masters degree in Curriculum and
Instruction. She has taught in preschool, elementary, and middle school classrooms, and has also worked as a reading specialist and
software consultant. Currently, Julie provides professional development opportunities for educators in the areas of technology
integration, curriculum development, and literacy skills and strategies. She has completed her third year in the doctoral program in
literacy and technolgy at the University of Connecticut. Her areas of interest include reading comprehension, critical reading strategies,
and effective practices for technology integration and professional development. Julie has published work in The Reading Teacher, the New England
Reading Association Journal, Theoretical Models and Processes of Reading, 5th Edition, and has an upcoming chapter in The Handbook of Literacy
and Technology, 2nd Edition. Julie enjoys writing, traveling, and spending time with her husband and two daughters.
