Exam 4 and Comprehensive Final, Saturday May 10, 3:30-5:30.
- Students in sections 01-05 and 23 (all Monday & Tuesday labs), take exam in CLAS 108
- Students in sections 06-10 and 21 (all Wednesday & Thursday labs), take exam in TLS 154.
- Bring two sharpened #2 pencils with functional erasers. You will need to fill in "bubble sheets". UConn does not supply us with pencils, and rooms do not have sharpeners. If you forget your pencil, you'll have to go find one or borrow one.
- Bring your student ID. Present it when handing in your answer sheet.
- The exam will begin promptly at 3:30 and end promptly at 5:30. Please be on time to give yourself the maximum time possible for the exam.
- We will use spaced seating, vacant seats on either side of you. Please cooperate with exam proctors to sit as directed.
- Hats and other headgear with brims covering your eyes are not allowed during exams. If you wear a hat, please turn the brim facing backwards or remove it.
- Exam format will be multiple-choice. There will be 45 questions for exam 4, and an additional 45 questions for the comprehensive final. The first 45 questions on the exam will be exam 4. You will be given a second answer sheet for the comprehensive final, which will be questions 50-95 in the exam. (There will not be any questions 46-49).
- Exam 4 will be on everything covered since exam 3: Chapters 45-49 as reflected in lecture material.
- The comprehensive final will include some questions from the last quarter of the semester (the same material as covered for exam 4). The remaining questions (approximately 38 questions) will be derived from questions on exams 1-3. Note that the questions will NOT be identical to those on the previous exams.
- Anyone wishing to take the final exams at a different time than the scheduled exam time must obtain approval from the Dean's office.
- Please go to the room you are assigned! We count exams and seats carefully, and do not have more than a few extras.

Final Exam information
- Final exam is Saturday, May 10, at 3:30 - 5:30 PM
- At the final exam period, you will have two separate exams. Exam 4 will be on all the material we have covered since exam 3 (chemical signals, reproductive systems, development, the nervous system, and muscle physiology). There will also be a comprehensive final, which everyone must take. The comprehensive final will include some material covered in class since exam 3, but most of the comprehensive final will be on material covered in the three previous exams, and the questions will be derived from those on exams 1-3. Note that the questions will NOT be identical to those on exams 1-3, so you should review the questions on previous exams and make sure you understand the principles behind the correct answers.
<- If you wish to take the final exam at a time different from the scheduled time, you must have a note of permission from the office of the Dean of Students. Your professors do not have the authority to grant exceptions to the published schedule. If you know you will have a conflict, please get your note of permission from the Dean prior to the scheduled exam time, and take that note to your professor.

Makeup exam for Exam 3
- Makeup for Exam #3: Monday April 21, 4:30 p.m., TLS 153
April 7, 2003
Snow cancellation - Monday PM lab section 23
- UConn has cancelled classes after 5:00 PM Monday, April 7. We are trying to reschedule the Monday evening lab (section 23). We will tentatively schedule a make-up lab section Wednesday evening, 6:00-9:00 PM.
- For those of you with scheduling conflicts, please email Dr. Walikonis to let me know of any conflicts (randall.walikonis@uconn.edu), and suggest other times that you may be able to make up the lab. If there are only a few of you that cannot make it to the Wednesday make-up session, we will try to get you into other sessions on an individual basis.
Hints for the exam
-
Some sample exam questions have been posted to Study Guide 10 to give you an idea of what to expect.
- The exam will be based on material covered in class. If we didn't talk about a particular topic in class (even if it is in the textbook), it won't be covered on the exam. For instance, we did not cover dentition or ruminant digestion in the nutrition lecture, so even though it is in the textbook, you won't be tested on it. However, the textbook is an excellent resource for reviewing material we did cover in class. I would suggest that you base your studies on your lecture notes, and review the same material in the textbook. Many of the figures I use in class are taken from the textbook. If a figure appeared in class, you should review it in the textbook, and be certain you understand what the figure shows.
A method for reviewing material that may be useful is to take turns explaning to a study partner how a certain process works. For instance, explain to a partner the processes of digestion in the stomach and duodenum, or the blood clotting cascade, or how T helper cells recognize that a macrophage has engulfed a bacterium. If you can explain it so your partner understands it, you probably have the concepts clear in your own mind. Finally, I tend not to ask for simple definitions. I am more interested that you understand concepts and physiological processes.

Monday Lab sections may postpone handing in written lab report due March 10 until Friday March 14

Considering the amount of time required to prepare the second written lab report, as well as the time needed to prepare for next Monday's exam, I am extending the due date for students whose labs meet on Monday for the lab report that is due on March 10. You may delay handing it in until Friday March 14 without penalty.
- Reports must be handed in by the end of class on Friday March 14. Give them to Prof. Terry or deliver them to the lab room (TLS 309).
- All reports will be graded over spring break, so reports for students with Monday labs, not received by the morning of March 14 will not be graded.
- This extension does not apply to students in Tues-Thurs lab sections.

Latest updates - Wednesday morning 2/19
-
There were no mail deliveries Monday or Tuesday due to the storm, so I have not received exams back. I hope to receive them today and if possible will post exam scores this afternoon.
- Will the following students please see me after class:
- Bhatt, K
- Berlinger, Lauren
- Zaharis, Panagiotis
-
Anyone who was unable to attend labs this Monday or Tuesday due to storm-related conditions may take the online makeup activity without needing to submit a petition form. Starting today, we revert to normalcy (I hope!) and requests for makeups should begin by filling out the petition form.
- A reminder to anyone who missed last Friday's exam -- if you have not yet submitted a makeup exam petition, but think you are eligible for next Monday's makeup exam, please get me your makeup petition and appropriate documentation as soon as possible.
- Makeup for Exam #1: Monday Feb. 24, 4:30 p.m., TLS 153

Dealing with snow cancellations - Tuesday morning 2/18
- UConn postponed classes on Tuesday Feb. 18, until 10 a.m. (Note: this was the information I received at 8 a.m. UConn later altered the wording). Lab section 03, that normally begins at 9:30 a.m., will begin at 10 a.m. instead.
- Classes meeting after noon yesterday, Monday Feb. 17, were cancelled. This includes lab sections 01, 02, and 23. There is no way we can physically reschedule these lab sections, so all students in these 3 sections should complete the online makeup actitivity instead. You do not need to complete a makeup petition if you were in one of these lab sections.

Exam 1 followup - updated
- Answer keys were posted Friday morning. Use the same userID/password combination as for all "protected" items as listed on syllabus and provided at beginning of the course
- Because of the snowstorm, exam grades were not returned on Monday. I don't know when I will receive them, but do not anticipate being able to post grades before Wednesday afternoon at the very earliest.
- The Teaching Assistant who was supposed to be at CLAS 108 by 7:30 a.m. on Friday morning lost power, lost her alarm signal, and did not wake up until 8 a.m. Apologies to those who expected to start the exam by 7:40 and were delayed. We owe thanks to another TA who showed up earlier than his 7:50 schedule and who made it possible for students in CLAS 108 to begin around 7:45 a.m. The TA who missed her proctoring assignment promises it will not happen again.

Thursday & Friday Lab sections may postpone handing in written lab report until next week's lab
-
Considering the amount of time required to prepare the written lab report, as well as the time needed to prepare for this Friday's exam, I am extending the due date for students whose labs meet on Thursday or Friday for the lab report that was due this week. You may delay handing it in until next week without penalty.
- This does not apply to students in Mon-Wed lab sections.
Feb. 12, 2003

- Prof. Terry will hold another Wed. afternoon review from 3-4 p.m. in TLS 154, Wed. Feb. 12.
Feb. 10, 2003
Exam this Friday, Feb. 14
- Students in lab sections 01-06 and 23 will take exams in CLAS 108. To get to CLAS, walk past the new Chemistry building, past Swan Lake, and across the road. CLAS is the building behind the bus stop.
- Students in lab sections 07-10 and 21 will take exams in TLS 154 (our regular classroom).
- A proctor will be in both exam rooms by 7:40 a.m. If you wish extra time, you may come as early as 7:40 to begin the exam.
- Students who work with CSD and need extra time must contact me early this week to make arrangements.
- We will use spaced seating, vacant seats on either side of you. Please cooperate with exam proctors to sit as directed.
- Hats and other headgear with brims covering your eyes are not allowed during exams. If you wear a hat, please turn the brim facing backwards or remove it.
- Exam format will be multiple-choice, 45-50 questions. You should have ~ 1 minute/question. Some questions will take you only 5-10 seconds. Most of you will be able to get through the exam in about 30 minutes, so don't panic!
- What's covered on the exam? Everything we've gone over in class so far. I begin by making a list of topics, right from the lecture notes -- elements, isotopes, covalent bonds, weak bonds, etc. Then I write the number of questions I think is appropriate -- typically one for a short topic, 2 or more for longer topics. These numbers are guidelines, not fixed absolutes, but I try to write or otherwise assemble questions that cover all my topics. Sometimes I think of a question that spans several ideas. Some questions involve diagrams. Some questions come directly or with slight modification from questions on study guides or practice quizzes. Some are written de novo as I assemble the exam. Writing an exam is a creative process, there are no fixed rules. My goal, always, is to probe your understanding, see if you have learned the concepts and can apply them.
- You will be able to keep your exams, so feel free to make marks for your use, and check your exam against an answer key afterwards. Only answer sheets get turned in and graded.
- If something unexpected happens to prevent you from being at the exam, download and fill out the petition for a makeup. Don't waste your time e-mailing me or phoning me -- all I can tell you in either case is to fill out the petition for a makeup. Attach all revelant documentation, and get this form to me as soon as possible! Note that the makeup date and time are already scheduled for all exams -- see syllabus.
- Please go to the room you are assigned! We count exams and seats carefully, and do not have more than a few extras. The rooms are only 5 minutes apart, so you will be able to get to your next class on time.

New Biology text for sale
I don't usually use this space for advertising, but here's a situation that might benefit one of you and another student.
"I was a nursing student last year and I was going to try and overenroll in biology 107 which i soon found out was impossible but I bought the books figuring I would need them for this semester. I changed my major and no longer need to take this
class. My book has never been used and the co-op won't take it back so I was wondering if any of your students would want to buy it from me. If anyone is interested you can give them this e-mail address: Star4CD@aol.com or, my number is 7-2040. Thank you!"

Student Management Team Selected
Many thanks to all of you who applied for this team. I wish I had room to accommodate you all, but five is the maximum size that really works well, so I had to select five of you, and I tried to balance diversity and backgrounds. The team will meet immediately after lecture every Friday morning.
Those selected are:
- Amy Fugate
- Sarah Grodzicki
- Lashanda Jackson
- Jonathan Reynolds
- Samar Rizvi

Can I overenroll? Can I switch to a different lab section?
Unfortunately,
no.
Lab sections and lecture hall are filled to capacity. We have added additional lab sections to accommodate demand for students who need this course because of their major. We do not have space for additional students who wish to use Biology 107 as a general education requirement.
All issues relating to waiting lists and permission numbers are being handled by our lab coordinator, Carol Norris. If your situation is such that you absolutely must have this course this fall, you can contact Ms. Norris, who is keeping a wait list and is controlling any seats that become available because of student drops. However, be aware that many other students are in the same situation. We will do our best, but we cannot guarantee miracles -- unless seats become available, we cannot squeeze new bodies into the course.
To contact Carol Norris:
Phone: 486-4972
E-mail: Carol.Norris@Uconn.Edu (case insensitive)
Office: TLS 2nd floor west (rooms are being renovated, room number will be announced when known).

Volunteers wanted for Student Management Team
If you're interested in helping to contribute to the success of this class
in
the following ways:
-
meeting for 10-15 minutes after each Friday lecture (~ 9:55 - 10:10 a.m.)
-
acting as a representative for other students in the class, so the
instructor
is quickly and well informed about any problems, difficulties,
or sources of
confusion that you or other students experience
-
assisting the instructor on rare occasions when handouts need to be distributed or
forms
collected
-
taking turns cleaning the board after class, so the instructor can
efficiently
deal with students that have questions
then I invite you apply for one of 5 positions as student team manager for
this
class. Please
send me an e-mail, including:
-
your name, intended major, and class standing (freshman, sophomore, etc.)
-
your gender if it is not obvious from your name (I hope I will have both
males
and females on the team -- sometimes I can't tell from name alone
where you
belong!)
-
whether you represent any special interest group (commuter, older
returning
student, working 20+ hours/week, etc.) -- I like my student
management teams to
reflect the diversity of the class
-
a short paragraph explaining why you are interested in being on this team
I will select the team to best reflect the diversity and composition of
the
class. Thank you for applying, and my apologies in advance to those of
you I
cannot fit onto the team in case I have more applicants than
spaces!

Advice and Encouragement from Former Students
I've asked some former students from this course to contribute a short letter about what happened to them
"after" Biology 107, and what advice they would like to pass on to current students. See "Former Students" link.
