Student comments on weekly WebCT online quizzes
Last revised: Wednesday, November 27, 2002

Question: Please tell us what you like and what you don't like about the weekly online quizzes in the WebCT environment. (Note: all quiz questions were selected from materials provided with the Campbell 6th ed. textbook -- they were not written by the instructors.)

Answers:
The only thing I didn't like so much was the fact that it was timed. If anything, 12 minutes was too short. I found myself watching the lock more then focusing on the questions at times. I feel as if I made some wrong choices on questions I knew the answers to just so that I could finish in time. I realize having no time limit might make the quizzes too easy, but perhaps 30 minutes wouldn't be so bad. What I do like about the quizzes is the fact that they are done at your leisure and don't waste valuable lecture or lab time. I also print them out when done to use as a reference for exams. This helps a great deal as the quizzes are what Dr. Terry tends to feel are the important points of those lectures.
These quizzes very useful in determining specifically what we were responsible for knowing and as an indicator of future exam questions. However, it could be difficult and tricky at times. As asked above, it was very useful in making sure I kept up with the readings as a portion of my grade was dependent on it.
I really like the weekly online quizzes, because it forces me to keep up with the readings. THe quizzes are also good because it will definately help my grade in the end since we are allowed to use any materials we have (notes, book). I also like how the lecture notes we print out, are exactly what we go over in class, so i really do not need to take many notes, except for some side notes that Dr. Terry would mention that were not already in the notes, or further explanation so that i would understand a concept better.
I really like the webct enviroment because it allowed me to print out the basic lecture notes so that i could follow what the professor said and could contrate on the information not on the notes. I also liked having the weekly quizes because if you read and went to the lectures it gave you a chance to boost your grade. The only thing that I did not like about webct is that the postings really ahd nothing to do with Professor Abbotts class.
Alot of times the material we needed to know for the quiz wasn't touched upon in lecture yet, and that made it difficult to do my best in the quizes. The lectures help you get the materials you read, (or were suppose to have read) more clear to you. It might have been more sufficient to have the quizes after one more lecture class so that way almost all materail was reviewed.
The online quizzies give students a reason to read the text. If there were no quizzes then most students I'm sure would not do the reading and just listen to the lecture. Then once the test came they would be unprepared or trying to cram everything into one night. Since so much material is covered before one exam it is a good idea to have these quizzes to break up the material. The only problem I have is that the quizzes cover the material that will be taught in the following lecture. If the quiz was allowed to be taken wednesday as well then the quizzes might go easier.
I do not like that I take the quiz's alone. Due to the fact that I play a sport and am an older student, I do not have the oppertunity to take the quiz's in a large group as happens with the younger students in the dorms. I have been getting mostly 70's for a grade. Some kids that live in the dorm are getting 90's and 100 on all the quiz's because they take them in groups. Also, for how hard the quiz's are, they should be worth 30 percent of the class grade. I also do not feel that what we cover in class is on the quiz's. Terry did a very poor job of readying the student for the quiz's, and the tests. He left all the teaching too the book and the web.
Of course it seems like a hassle to always have to write a quiz every week, however, this has helped me a lot in keeping up with material. I think that the weekly quizzes are a great idea. Often times I learn about little things that I didn't know about before. In this way, the quizzes allowed me to know what to expect for larger exams in class. The time allowment is just right because that way you are forced to know the material indepth. Also, the WebCT has been really easy for me to work with and I like how we can see all our grades from past quizzes. Therefore, the weekly quizzes have made me keep on top of all the material. When I find things that I don't understand I can easily ask for help at the next lecture. Overall the WebCT quizzes are great.
I like how the online quizzes force you to keep up with the reading of the course. However, I think it's stupid that we are not allowed to know what the correct answers are at the end of the quizzes. We can't learn from our mistakes!!!
The structure of the quizzes is good. The set up online is helpful letting you know the time left and the number of questions left. The quizzes are very challenging and should be based more around lecture.
I absoulutely HATED the online quizes. There were way to many techincal problems that came along with them and thus had a bad influence on my grade which i dont think is fair in the slightest bit. In a chem class i took over the summer we had online quizes as well, however you could not submit the quiz until all the answers were right and it only counted as extra credit if you did it. It was simply a way to get students to study for a real quiz that would take place in class the next day. So in the case that you did have technical difficulty it didnt count against you since the points are just extra credit anyway. So i guess what im saying is the online quizes are a great way to get students to study however i think the actual quiz that is going to be worth a rather lagre 15% of the grade should be giving in class so that absolutely NO problems will occur.
the tests are too short.
The thing that I like about the quizes, is that it keeps me up to my readings. The thing that I don't like is the fact that we cant make up quizes, some of us get very busy and at times miss a quiz. We should have a day to make some up or to get a better grade in the ones that were very bad.
If I had a choice, I would prefer to have online quizzes in a class. They keep me on track with the course reading. I can't keep everything to the last minute, since I have to read for each weekly quiz. However, the online quizzes are sometimes difficult and the time limit is insufficient to finish them. Overall they boost my grade, and I don't think they are going to bring me grade down. They are great for studying for tests, and taking them shows me my weak points. When knowing my weak points it gives me a chance to go over the materials that I made a mistake on.
I didn't like that the time limit was so short because I would often find myself rushing. This would sometimes made me make mistakes and click the wrong answers. I liked the quizzes though because they reflected the important information we had to know, and they were hard enough that it wasn't just an easy way to pull up your grade.
The online quizes seemed to be a good idea in the begining. I thought it would help me keep up with the reading and therefore help me improve my grade. However, if i had not done the reading before the quiz, then i would fail the quiz. This just discouraged me and made me not want to read the chapter. If i could read the chapter anytime, then i would feel like i had more controll over my studying time and i think i would do better on the test. Making us take online quizes is also annoying becuase my computer is very slow and it takes time away from taking the quiz. Also i forget to take the online quiz alot becuase i dont have to take one for any other class and therefore its not part of my daily routine like going to class or the library is. i hate the online quizes but i think it is a good idea in theory but something that alot of college students just dont want to deal with. thank you for trying to help us keep up with the reading and improve our grade though, i think you are an excellent professor.
Ok, heres the part of the coarse I have mixed feelings about. I like the concept of the online quizzing, and it helps give practice questions and makes students keep up with the reading. However, people in the class cheat on the quizes. I am one of the people that don't cheat on them, and end up receiveing a lower grade than them. Also, some of the quizes are just very hard. I will read through the whole chapter and do the website activities, and still receive a 70%(I have not yet gotten a grade over 80% on one). My suggestion would be, to instead of making it an online quiz, make it an annex to the weekly quiz in lab, dumbing down the questions a little bit so that the book is not needed.
I like the fact that the online quizzes make me read the chapter and keep up with the lectures, but I did not feel that from 8am Tuesday to 8am Wednesday was enough time to access the quiz. I have a very full schedule on Tuesday and I have to do the quiz late at night. I think the quiz should be open at least 2 days.
In lecture I learned only a moderate amount of information. All the information I did learn was simply the notes which were posted. Although I like our professor, I don't see how the notes we recieved or the lectures had anything to do with quizzes. Even though I did some readings and read the notes, they had hardly anything to do with the majority of test questions. Most of these questions were not learned from the recources that were available to students. Although I understand that the professor tried to make quizzes difficult because they were taken at home, I don't understand how he expects us to know the answers to the questions given when they are not found in the text. There is so much information in the book, and students are overwhelmed. If the professor wants us to learn certain things for quizzes, he should pinpoint these areas instead of expecting us to learn the entire text book and more that is not even covered in the text.
The online quizzes kept me disciplined. I am not a very good learner on my own. I would rather have a structured course with weekly assignments to help learn the material than weekly readings. I have a very hard time learning from a textbook. They kept me up to date with the material. It's nice to have them online and not in class because i have a 24 hour window to take them. However, this semester, i have 2 labs and a class on tues (which means 3 quizzes every tues) which made it difficult. But not everyone's schedule can be accomodated so, overall, it was a positive experience.
At first the weekly quizzes seemed slightly annoying because of the fact that they had to be taken within a specified time window, for the most part because Tuesdays are very busy for me and I had little time to do the quiz until late at night. As the course progressed the quizzes became more helpful because they set a time during the week where I would have to focus on my biology work, and I would make sure that I had read the chapters in the book for that quiz.
I like the weekly online quizes becuase it makes me stay on top of my reading, without them i probably would fall behind. I think that some of them are extremely difficult though. Also, since so much time and effort is put into these quizzes i think that they should me worth a greater percentage of our grade. Maybe having 15 minutes instead of just 12 would help too, i always feel rushed when i am taking them.
I like that some of the questions are similar to what we might be exposed to on an exam. The one thing that has inhibited me from doing well is that there is a time limit on the quizzes. It made me more nervous and frazzled in addition to not being able to concentrate because I was worrying about my time limit the entire time I was taking them. I really discourage a time limit on the online quizzes.
I have been having trouble finishing the quizzes in the 12 minutes. I find myself rushing my answers and not putting in the time I would need to get the right answer because I am so worried about running out of time. The questions themselves are also extremely wordy and obviously designed to confuze you. There is no problem with testing our knowledge but it should be either the time limit OR the long wordy questions with ambiguous answers.
The weekly online quizzes are the best part of the class. They help me to keep up with the required readings. They also give me an insight to my weaknesses and areas of improvement. They prodive a similiarity to what to expect for the tests. They are an excellent preparation material for studying.
I think that the online quizzes are extremely helpful, not only as a grade booster but also as a way to study for the exam. Sometimes though, some of the questions go into too much detail for a twelve minute quiz. For those questions it takes a few minutes alone to read and understand the question without even reading the answers to pick with one is right or wrong. Also, I have had a problem with taking the quizzes in that I finished one and received a very poor grade on it and when I didnt immediately logout to go over the material again it automatically began the quiz a second time for me. By the time I realized what had happened, i was already ten minutes over time without even looking at the questions.
I don't like that I only have 24 hours to take it. As a pre-pharmacy major, I dont have all that much time in my schedule. it's hard enough finding time to study. but i do like the fact that they are taken from both the lecture notes and the reading, because it forces me into reading the chapter when i wouldnt normally.
As mentioned above i find the web quizes to be extremly hard and overall not useful to me at all. They stress me out more then help me. Even if i read the chapter so of the information asked is too detailed. The amount of practical application is also difficult. One one quiz in particular the diagrams looked nothing like in the book or the notes so you had to guess either way. Therefore, i do not enjoy the online quizes at all
The Online quizzes on WebCT were a good addition to the course. They were a bit hard some of the time, but that should be expected with access to the book and notes while taking them. A quiz every week is a good help in keeping up with the materials. Im glad that they count for as much as they do towards the final grade because Im not a very good test-taker and this helps me in the end.
I think the materials on webct are great. They keep m updated with any new materials and answer many problem that I have encountered during this course. I am doing well in the online quizzes but sometimes i find that I need alittle more than ten minutes for the quizzes and sometmes my grade reflects that. I hope to do well in this course and I think that WebCT has kept me on task and helped to create a better learning envrionment for all students. I think that the questions are fair even though sometimes it seems like they ae too hard compared to the practice quiz corresponding to that quiz. WebCT ae very helpful and I wil continue to take thm hoping that they will help to increase my grade.
It was very frustrating to use them when theu went wrong or away from school. They helped my grade tremendously. Overall I liked them.
Like I previously stated, the weekly on-line quizzes help me tremendosly because my Tuesday schedules were always hectic, it gave me a lot of time to do it. Ehat I didnt like was that after the quiz was over and the grades we submitted u werent able to recieve the correct answers to the questions that you got wrong.
I definitely like the WebCT setup. I find that with my classes that are on WebCT, I feel more connected. I like being able to post questions and having the professor respond. I also like the central environment where all of my classes are on one page and I do not have to go to several different online locations. I find it is much easier having all of the materials online rather than flipped through handouts since I am on my computer most of the time anyway.
I think the weekly online quizzes are a good way to keep students on track and make sure they are doing what they are suppose to be doing. It is very helpful and it just helps supplement what is being taught to us in lecture and what we are reading in the book. Sometimes I feel that the online questions are very difficult and hard to answer. I think that this is a good way of enhancing and applying what is being learned. But I have run into a few problems online with the timing and WEBCT not being aviable. I feel that if 24 hours is not enough to finsish a quiz. But I think that knowing we have only 24 hours helps make us be prepared.
At first i hated the online quizes, because taking them on a computer felt wierd and i finding the right time and place to take them was difficult. However, after taking a few it became easier and I think i am finally comfortable to in taking them. At first the time limit was a problem, but now i have learned how to study so that the answers come quickly to me.
For the weekly online quizes, I enjoyed the second chance for taking each quiz because I would do better on the second quiz than I did on the first because I was less nervous, and knew what to expect, and understood the material a little better. I did not like the time limit. With quizes and tests I get anxious and my mind goes blank. I understand that the student must know the material, or be able to find it quickly in the notes and book in order to get a good grade, but I have been studying each time very much, and still get nervous and don't do so well on the first quizes.
I think the WebCT quizzes are a good idea and help keep students on track. It would be helpful if it was more established exactly what the quiz will be on. I think the amount of time allotted was fair, as is dropping the two lowest quiz grades and taking the highest of the two. I think it would helpful if on wednesday the correct answers to the quizzes were posted. That way the same mistakes are not repeated. Also, some of the questions are wordy and too elaborate and should be rephrased.
I do not have internet access so finding a time when I could access WebCT proved to be extremely difficult for me (I have several study-intensive courses that I work on at home). Since the initial classes though, I have started studying at the library to make things easier for me. The 48 hour time limit for the quizzes is a bit inane, in my opinion. A week would be more appropriate for people in my position since the quizzes could be done on weekends.
Overall, the online WebCT quizzes were useful. Sometimes, the questions were a little too detailed for the allotted time. The quizzez really did "force" me to get the reading done, so I never really fell behind. That made it a lot easier to study before the exams.
I like computers and the internet, so this was easy and felt all cool and futuristic...online classes! What fun! But they were pretty hard. Wait, so were the exams (at least the second one). I liked them, but sometimes ended up stressing out more than I should have over them. My roommate, who is also in the class, and I would freak out some Tuesdays, which was not conducive to suceeding on the quizzes.
Online quizzes are very beneficial in that I learn what my professors think is important in the readings. I also love that I can take them in the privacy of my own dorm room. However, in my experiences with the online quizzes, I have not done very well. This goes along with exams. For some reason, I do not do well on multiple choice exams. I get very confused and read into the questions wrong. I wish I had more time for the online quizzes, say a half an hour to complete one, because this would make me find the correct answers in the book, get good grades on the quizzes, and learn what is important to know while taking the quizzes. I never have enough time to finish the quizzes and I always find them to be extremely hard. In addition, sometimes as I am taking a quiz, my roomate interrupts me and I can't concentrate fully on the quiz. This makes me waste time on the quiz. I hope in the second part of the semester I will be able to bring up my online quiz average.
I liked the online quizes because it forced me to keep up on the reading and i didn't have to cram as much when the test came up becuase i had been learning all along. I didn't like the fact that some of the questions were very specific and i didnt pick up details from the reading. I also didnt like the fact that sometimes we didn't get to cover all of the chapter in lecture before we took the quiz on it.
The quizes were helpful like the practice quizes in reviewing the material. They corresponded fairly well with the content in the text. However, some of the questions seemed to be too specific, or covered material that was only mentioned in the lectures. Still, most of the questions were very good and made me use the concepts instead of memorizing things. I had no difficulties or issues with the technical aspect of trying to take the quizes.
I like the webct quizzes because it is easier to have us take them whenever we can durring the day rather then giving quizzes in class. I think there wasnt enough time for most of the quizzes, i felt rushed by the time i got to the end. Maybe like 16 to 20 minutes would be better. I dont see the need for a time limit, we are being graded on if we know the information and if we read the book. If i do know the information then i should be able to show it, a lot of times on the quizzes i have rushed through questions that i probablly would have gotten right because i felt that i was running out of time.
I like the weekly online quizzes because they keep me in tract to what I have to keep studying and they help me study for the exams so I know my weak areas and my strong areas. The thing I do not like about the online quizzes is the time limit and how we only have 24 hours to take them. This often makes me nervous and stressed out. Also the questions are very specific and sometimes that causes difficulty in answering them.
I think that the idea behind the quizzes is beneficial, however they actually hurt my grade thus far. I frequently forget to take the quizzes, and I have experienced difficulty when I did remember. I also thought that the quizzes were somewhat hard.
I like most of the WebCT format. Seeing the wrong answers on the quiz is very helpful, along with being able to take it twice and get the highest grade. I don't like the time limit at all. Some quizzes are really hard and 12 minutes is not enough time to definitly get the right answer.
The good thing about having these quizzes is that I have no choice but to keep up with the reading. I feel that the quizzes could be a lot easier...but I am glad that we have two chances per quiz to get a decent grade. I feel that I get stressed out because it is timed and from trying to rush I sometimes don't even understand exactly what the question is asking me.( i read so fast i mistake what the question is asking for.) In class you brought up feelings of being in a mental staight jacket...I feel I am in one all the time with these quizzes. I like having the quizzes because it gives me a chance to bring up my grade in the class sense i don't test well at all.
The online quizzes I think are great. I know in many of my classes I seldom keep up with the reading but for this class the online quizzes force me to do so. I also think they are going to help my grade out a lot. I wish some of my other classes especially Animal Science would develop an online quizzing method. My only complaint is some of the question seem very complex and don't seem to even be explained anywhere in the book or in lecture. Many times I write the questions I'm having trouble with down and then go back and look them up especially the long story like ones and have trouble finding even similiar problems.
I think that the online quizzes are relatively hard and I find it hard to predict what types of questions to prepare for. I also think its hard to completely understand some of the materials because some of the materials used for the quizzes are not covered until the next day in lecture. I think that using the book helps a lot during the quiz and it is also helpful to use the quizzes to prepare for the exams. I also like the fact that we have two chances and the highest grade counts.
I found that the quizzes were helpful to help us review for the sectin and help prepare for the test. I felt that some times they contained questions that were to hard and detailed. Some of the questions also seem to be tricky.
i feel like they are hard and i get stressed and feel rushed cause I am worrying about running out of time. They do help to keep me on top of my work though.
I feel that the online quizzes are very useful in helping me determine what parts of the material I need to look over again. Also, I don't think I would have kept up with my assigned reading if I didn't have these quizzes. The quizzes kept me from falling behind. They forced me to study which I liked.
I thought that the weekly quizzes really made me read everything and pay attention to important details. The quizzes helped show you the important points in the chapter. I found that these quizzes helped me to remember a lot more of what I read, and were good study tools for the exams. What I didn't like was how there were only 12 minutes allowed. Some of the quizzes were more difficult than others and it takes time to use your notes to look up the answers. So maybe a few more min should be given.
The quizes are good becuase they make me keep up with the readings. I don't like the fact that they are so hard. I find the quizes to be extemely difficult and stressful. This is understandable though, i guess, becuase it is open notebook although the answers are sometimes difficult to find in the book. So i guess overall i like the quizes but just think they should be just a little bit easier.
The webCT quizzes are useful in the fact that it helps me to keep up with the reading. Honestly, if we did not have weekly quizes I think that I would be behind on the reading. I also liked that I could use the quizzes later on to study for the exams. I however encountered a problem once when a message came up and said my time was up and it would not let me take the quiz a second time. I was only able to take it once. I don't know what caused this but overall my usage of the quizzes was OK.
I like the idea of taking weekly quizzes online. It helps to keep me in track of studying the materials for this course. But since i don't own my own computer, sometimes i have to take the quiz in not so learning environment which can be distructive sometimes.
The weekly online quizzes through WebCT are great because they force students to keep up with their reading and test their understanding of key concepts and ideas. The aspect of the quizzes that I do not like is that sometimes they are quite difficult, and the questions focus on obscure details. Often times, what is discussed in lecture or what will be covered on future exams is not what these weekly quizzes focus on.
The online quizzes are very beneficial to me. It requires reading the assigned chapters thouroughly, so I highlight and use the study guides so I can apply them when taking the weekly online quizzes. I also like the fact that we have two chances to take the quiz and our highest grade is counted, because some questions are easier than others and we have a chance to re-read the material.
I like the whole idea of the online quizzes because it is a chance to better my grade. They also make me keep up with my reading. Some of the time I feel that the time is too short because not everybody has a fast computer and it takes my computer a bit longer than fast ones to reload the page each time after I save an answer. So I feel like even if they were just a few minutes longer, say a total of 15, it might make a world of difference.
the quizzes really help you keep on top of the reading and they will boost my grade in the end. I have nothing bad to say about them except that maybe it would be easier to have them available to 48 hrs so that people who had exams say on Weds could take the quiz on Weds and focus on their exam instead.
The WebCT quizes are fantastic! They help reinhibit reading over the chapters so the materials are reenforced for the exams later and preparations to show students were reading the materials or were not reading the materails. The quiz grades are shown fairly as they are presented in a similar manner, nothing was too hard, nor was it too easy. The only problemn I found was 12 minutes might not be the best amount of time for all the questions, sometimes I finish and it says I overdid it by like, 5 seconds, when I was finished. But I'm sure it's not a problem.
I like the idea of the online quizes. It seems as if it could be a good way to boost your class grade. I do find that the questions are pretty hard though. I often read the chapter 2 or 3 times and still find myself fumbling through the pages looking for the answers when I am taking the quiz.
What I like about the quizzes is that it makes me keep up with the reading. What I don't like is that we don't have a lot of time to do the quizzes and some of the questions are so detailed that I don't feel I have enough time. Sometimes I feel that the questions are unclear, or that the answers are not appropriate.
I think that the weekly online quizzes are a great way to test my knowledge of the week's lecture topics. Sometimes the quiz questions seem a little too difficult compared to the information given in lecture but the majority of the quizzes are very fair. I like the quizzes because they are both a good way to study and a good way to boost my grade.
The weekly quizes make us keep up on our readings. It is an extra incentive to get all your work done. If there were not weekly quizzes i dont think that i would be caught up to the readings for each lecture. I feel that the quizzes should be a little longer than 12 minutes, just so we have more time to think and less time worring about if we will finish on time. Maybe about 14 minutes would help out, but overall i finish on time but the extra time would help to look over questions and feel comfortable with what we have answered.
I like that the weekly online quizzes make us keep up-to-date with the reading. I also like that the higher grade we get is the one that sticks. I dont like that some of the questions are unrealistic questions that wouldnt be one the test. I guess that this must be done so that it isn't extremely easy to get 100 on them. I also dont like that those quizzes can only be done within 12 hours or however long we have.
i did not enjoy the weekly online quizzes on the webct. I did very poorly on them. I dont do so well under timed quizzes, especially if it is 12 miues long. Iknow that it was open book, but sometimes it was hard for me to find exactly what the question was looking for. the computer as well would mess up, and would not work, or let me get into the webstie to take the quiz. there was a time, where I tried to take the exam and it would only let me take on of the two quizzes, and i did not do to well on it. mabye if there was more time given for the quizzes then i would have done better, but hey that could just be me, I am sure many students did fine on the quizzes.
I don't like the fact that I read the book for hours at a time, and study for the quiz, and when I go to take the quiz, the questions seem really hard. Maybe it's just me. The time limit is kind of restricing as well, because you have to sometimes rush at the end, since you only have 12 minutes to complete the exam. I really like the fact that you get two chances on the quiz, and it automatically takes the higher of the two grades.
I liked the online quizes because they helped me to test my knowledge about the material that we have learned. Some of the quizes are hard for me and I sometimes don't have enough time to do them. I find multiple choice questions hard because some of the answers seem to fit even though they aren't exactly the right ones. Other then that I thought that the quizes were reasonable and helpful.
to be honest i think that if i had prepared myself better for the online quizzes i would have done better on them. they were definatly harder than i expected them to be. i used them a lot to study for the exams. i think that the online quizzes are a good idea, it helps keep you up to date with the class.
I think that the weekly online quizzes were very helpful in learning the material. It forced you to have to keep up with each chapter and you couldn't just not try for a week or two. The only thing I would have liked was if the window to take it was maybe a couple of days instead of just one because sometimes Tuesday was busy and I would not think about it until later on in the day. There were some questions on the quizzes that I thought were a little too specific in their answers because some of them could have two answers be right.
I didn't mind taking the online quizes. The only part that I didn't like was how we were supposed to do the quizes by ourselves and everyone did them together. When people did them together they got higher grades and I now have lower grades because I did them myself.I know that there is not a lot that can be done about that, but I just feel that people who did the quizes together had an unfair advantage over those who were doing what we were told to do.
I like the fact that the online quizes forced me to read the assigned chapters. Also it gave me a good reality check and pointed out that i didn't know as much as i though. They were helpful in planing what to focus my studying on when exams came up.
The only thing that I like about the weekly online quizzes is that it helps me to keep up with my reading. Other than that, I don't care for the quizes. I think they are hard. However, I do appreciate that we can take the highest of two scores. I kind of wish the online quizes were worth extra credit points to exam or final grades, than 15%.
The online quizzes are great. They force me to do the reading and study biology on a regular basis. This way the biology stays in my head and doesn't dissapear after each exam. I will admit it is kind of stressful taking them in 12 minutes, but it was still a good amount of time. All in all they are a positive experience.
The thing that i personal do not like about the weekly online quizzes is that it has to be done in a day. Sometimes i forget to do the quiz and remember late at night and then rush through it. Other times i have lots of homework to do in my other classes and did not have a chance to read the chapter yet and so i am forced to take the quiz with just skimming the chapter. In that kind of way, I'm not really learning anything just trying to memorize key points for the moment. We should be able to take the quiz maybe within a three day period.
What I really like about the quizzes is that they are all from the lecture notes and they really cover what may be on the exam. After taking each quiz every week, I have come to really get used to what to expect. I pay close attention to the lecture notes. I like that we have the option of changing our answeres on the quiz before submitting them. What i really love is that we are allowed to take the quiz two times instead of once and that the best grade out of two counts. That is really helpful because often times, i do better the second time than the first. There is nothing that I really dislike about the weekly quizzes. It has become apart of my weekly activity to take them. I think they are fair in the way they are presented and in what they ask. Also, I think they help me to do well on the exams because I do not forget the material.
I personally liked the online quizes. Since I had problems attending the large lecture class (fear of big groups), it helped being forced to do the reading and understanding the material. The fact that some of the questions were harder and forced you to read very carefully helped. I could imagine that this aspect would be disliked by many students, but I found it a challenge. The fact that it was timed also added an extra challenge and made the quiz almost like a game to beat. For me, the online quizes were a good experience. The webCT site was kind of annoying because you had to log in every time, but for the most part it was okay, just a slight inconvenience.
Taking the quizzes online with webct was a great idea. I enjoy the fact that i have to read before i take them, I myself can be a procrastinator but this has helped me keep up with the readings and understand the information. I have learned in some cases though computer's can be iritating with connections being slow or distractions, so i have learned that sometimes the computer lab is the best place to take the quizzes since there is a time restriction and staying in this is a must. Overall i have done well which is a postitive reinforcment tool for me and makes continuation for trying easier. I do not do so well on the exams, for lack of nervous jitters and it has worked out where i have had other exams on the same day.
I like the quizzes. There are sometimes some questions that are a little too difficult and a little ambigious. But on the whole the quizzes aren't too difficult. They help me keep on top of the readings and what I need to review more in terms of the tests.
I said in an earlier question that the quizzes were ok, but some of the questions were a little difficult. I was never a big fan of quizzes anyway, but nevertheless, they had to be taken. I liked the fact that the highest score was taken and not the average, this was a good change since the beginning of the semester. The time period was adequate but it can put some pressure on students to rush answers to questions they get stuck on. One final point that I didn't like and that's the fact that they were only accessable for a 24 hour window. A couple of times I experienced busy weeks and got stuck trying to read the text and notes right before I took the quiz late at night.
I thought the weekely quizes were very difficult, but i thought they were incredibly helpful since the questions on the webct quizes were very similar to thoe found on the exams. Also i feel that they helped me study for the exams by forcing me to keep up with the readings.
I find that the idea of students being able to test themselves as the course progresses is a very good idea. However i do not think that the timed weekly quizzes should count for points. It is unfair that the material covered in these quizzes are not even covered by the professor until the following week. I feel these quizzes should be summaries of the past week if they are to count for points.
I find that the timing for the quizzes is too short. I can do the quiz in twelve minutes but knowing that I have ONLY twelve minutes makes me clam up and/or make stupid mistakes. I like that the quizzes are weekly because they make me keep up with the reading. If the quizzes were not weekly I probably would not do weekly reading but leave it all for the week of an exam.
I like the weekly online quizzes because they force me to do the weekly reading and keep up with the course, otherwise I feel like I would fall behind and have no reason to keep up. They make studying a little easier because I am familiar with some of the information when I begin to study, rather than seeing the information for the first time before the exam. I do not like the amount of work that I put into them, all the studying and preparing does not reflect in my grade. Sometimes it seems like I should not have studied because it was worthless. I also found that sometimes on of the quizzes is so much easier than the other and I think that they would be more helpful if they were of the same consistency. Overall, I did like the quizzes because it makes me continue studying and Ialso found them helpul to study before the exams.
I really liked the online quizzes. Obviously I was sometimes annoyed that I had to do one, but it definitely made me do the readings. I would have skipped at least one chapter had I not had to take a quiz each week. They also brought my grade up cause I did more reading and I usually got good grades on the quizzes themselves.
I loved the online quizing. The only problem I found with them was a personal one, that I quickly fixed. I learned to turn of any form of Instant messaging and close and lock my door with a note saying "taking quiz." The first quiz I took i tried this but I guess kids dont understand what "taking a quiz" means. Nedless to say I got a bit distracted. However, the online quizes are probably my favorite part of the course. I take them 30 minutes after I read the chapter, to see if the subject has sunk in. More often than not, the quizes let me get a feel of how well I paid attention, what i need to pay more attention to, and how I am doing in the class inn general.
I hate quizzes; they make me nervous, and I really stress about these quizzes. However, they are good in that they force me to stay up with the reading (often at the cost of my other classes. :( As I said above, it'd be helpful if you could give us more than a day to get online and take the quizzes. I have class until 3:30, and then I go to work on Tuesdays, so I don't get back until after 11, and then I have to worry about the quiz. The quizzes are also often too difficult...in that they sometimes nit-pick details rather than going for the bigger concepts. I find I do better on the quizzes if I focus my time trying to remember where to reference details in the text rather than building a solid understanding of the material. Perhaps if you start with a real general conceptual question, and get progressively more specific in each of the questions, that would be better.
I like the online quizzes because it forces me to read the assigned material without getting behind. It also helps so that I am not too overwhelmed when it comes to the exams. The timing for the quizzes is pretty fair. I do feel that the timing should correspond with the length of the assigned chapters. Since the exams count for such a large portion of our grade, I would have felt more comfortable having a third online quiz dropped. Either that or have the quizzes count more for our final grade. I also hoped that more of the questions on the online quizzes were seen on the exams. Other than those comments, the online quizzes were pretty fair.
I liked the online quizzes because they forced me to keep up on the assigned reading. However, on weeks when I had bilogy and chemistry exams, having a longer window of time to take the quizzes would have been helpful. But otherwise, i think te quizzes worked well.
I think the online quizzes are a very good part of this class. They made it so that i did the majority of the reading which may have otherwise not been done. They will help with my grade because I have been doing well on them. I would reccommen that you use these online quizzes. They were a very positive experience for me. I learned a lot more by reading the text for the online quizzes. There is nothing negaative that I can say about them.
The weekly online quizzes helped me a lot because I felt as though I had to read the chapters before taking them. This made my study habits improve becuase I knew that I was reading when I should have been reading it and not putting it off. I do however feel that maybe a couple more minutes on each quiz would have made it less stressful and hurried.
Well while the weekly quizzes do serve a purpose and they are reletively helpful, the time frame that they are available is quite inconvinent. 8am to 8am only really leaves tuesday that the quiz can be taken. For someone who has a very busy day on tuesday this posess quite a challenge. Even if the time the quiz was available was pushed back to later in the day it would help because then it would be available for part the next day when someone could actually get to campus and have time to take the quiz. I also find that the level of difficulty between questions widely varies, you will get one question that is easy and one question that leaves you scratching your head, I think there should be more uniformity with how the quiz questions are selected.
The weekly online quizzes did make me keep up with the readings, which i did mostly 100% of the time. I put a lot of time and effort into the readings, however the results were not as i would have liked to see. I felt that some of the questions on the quiz were not very relevant. I would have also liked to finish all the lectures prior to the quiz that way the material would be easier to grasp. The time factor for the most part was ok, but sometimes under time pressure i tend to panick, which causes me to freeze and thus not do as well as i would like to. I felt that these quizzes were put here to help our grade, but i feel like that is not the case.
The weekly online quizzes are really helpful in learning the information in the chapters assigned to us, and they help raise our grades in the course. I like how I can look at all my quiz grades online, and I like how we have two opportunities to complete the online quizzes. The quizzes are usually very fair, although there have been a few quizzes that have been a little too challenging. I do not really have any complaints about the online quizzes other than I would like them to have a larger impact on my biology grade.
I believe that the weekly online quizzes are very helpful and help me understand the reading material more clearly after I have taken them. The quizzes also prompt me to read material more often and more thoroughly. I am sure that my grades on the exams would be much lower if the quizzes were nonexistent. The time limit of the quizzes seem extremely reasonable, and I have never had a problem with staying within limits. It seems to keep you focusing on what you have learned as opposed to making it seem as if there is enough time to get the information from the readings.
Overall, I like the weekly online quizzes but there are some aspects I don't like. For a mulitple choice quiz, some questions are very detailed and require some extra thinking. I believe that some quizzes required more than the allotted 12 minutes. Time aside, I found the online quizzes helpful and more classes should use them.
The only thing I like about the online quizzes is the fact that they might boost your grade up, but in my case I find these quizzes very hard, so I usually end up with bad grades like 70's and my grade does not get raised by these quizzes. The quizzes should be available for a longer time, like all of Tuesday and all of Wednesday. Some of the topics on the quizzes are never discussed before we have to take them. I feel we should be quizzed on what is discussed in lecture, because after lecture I feel that I have more of an understanding of the topics. The quiz questions are way too detailed also. I feel that Professor Terry should make his own questions for the online quizzes because the text questions are very specific. We should be quizzed on more basic topics instead of very specific details. Also the questions should not be switched when we take it the second time because most of the time there are more questions to confuse you more. We should know what we got wrong on the first quiz, go back to the book, review what we got wrong and take the quiz again. Kind of feel rewarded with a better grade for reviewing what we got wrong and learning more.
I think the weekly quizzes are way too hard compared to the tests. I have been doing very poorly on them and ok on the tests which shows that they do not reflect my effort.
I think the online quizes are a great tool for the class. These help prepare you for the futures tests as well as just retaining the knowledge. These quizes also force you to read the chapters and stay on top of the chapters. The only draw back of these quizes are the errors with the webct system. One time it stated that time has expired, and another time my computer froze during my quiz, causing me to answer three questions wrong. Over all I would recommend that the online quizes are a good tool for the future classes.
I find the weekly online quizzes fairly helpful. They do keep me in line as far as making sure i have some notion of what chapter of the book we're in. To be quite honest without it i probably would fall far behind in class. As it is i am one of the people who does not find time for the quizzes until late tuesday night, and end up rushing to study and complete them. If i were to buget my time better i would find them even more helpful to my overall grade. Although the questions asked soemtimes do confuse me, and the answers i get incorrect are wrong due to misinterpritaions. This is also my own fault for not taking my time or seeking extra help.
I liked the quizes because they encouraged me to study weekly and do the assigned reading. This, I imagine, would help a lot of students from waiting until the last day before the exam to study, that's what they did for me. However, I thought some of the questions were very in depth and I found that I was spending a lot of time studying the material, but still getting low grades on the quizes. The fact that the quizes were timed made me very nervous and I couldn't focus. I know that they need to be timed, it's the point. However, I was just always worried about running out of time and reading the question thouroughly and everything. It was stessful. But, for the most part, they're helpful and they give the students an idea of the type of question that would be asked on an exam and the set-up of the questions, how much detail to know...etc.
I like the online quizzes because it forces me to not fall behind on my reading of the chapters. I have never had to rush to read both chapters the day of the online quiz. The weekly quizzes also force me to focus on and actually learn the information I am reading in the chapter because I know that I will be quizzed on it. There is no way I would do well on a quiz if I hadn't read and I was just searching the text for the answers to the quiz questions. The only aspect I don't like about the online quizzes is when the quiz on a chapter comes before the lecture for the chapter. Sometimes questions are asked that are not in the book, but were disscussed the next day in lecture, and I would have never known the answer beforehand.
Besides the fact that the online quizzes force you to read the chapters, i dont like anything about the online quizzes. First of all they take up way to much time. I'm currently taking two other science classes along with other classes and biology takes up so much of my time that i cant even focus on the other classes. Preparing for the labs and studying for the tests takes up so much time, and preparing for the online quizzes takes up the rest of your time. I basically had no time for my other classes. The questions on the quizzes were also at times extremly hard. I read all the chapters...took notes...went to all the lectures...printed out the lecture notes, and did all of the activities on the campbell website, along with taking their quizzes, and i still had a hard time with the online quizzes. I dont think that is fair. Some of the questions asked were things that no one would catch onto while reading the book. "The fine print". There is also not enough time given. I think that you should be alowed 15 minutes instead of 12, especially when you put hard questions on there.
I like the fact that the online quizzes relate to the weekly readings and that usually they coincide well. I didn't like the fact that they were timed because I found myself concentrating more on the fact that I was running out of time rather than the fact that I needed to concentrateon the questions.
I did not like the online quizzes too much. The wording of the questions were too difficult. They were confusing. If you know your stuff it's a good way to boost your grade but a lot of the time the questions were too hard. They didn't seem like they were at the right level for us too understand. A lot of the questions that were asked were confusing.
I like having the weekly online quizzes since it helps organize me in keeping up with the readings although it can be a little stressful at times. I also like how we do have a second chance to take the quiz in case we did poorly on the first one and need to review the material more. I didn't like the quizzes covered material we had not yet discussed because sometimes that was the most confusing. I think the WebCT setup for the quizzes worked well and made them easily accessible.
I felt that the weekly online quizzes did help with keeeping up with the reading, and forces me to study more then I probably would have, but I also feel that the quizzes were more focused around little specific bits of information and your lecture notes, rather then then the assigned readings themselves. I also think that some of the times it was a little unclear what readings the quizzes would be on because we skipped some chapters here and there. The quizzes jumped from a little fact in the text to something in your notes, then to something I have never seen before. Make them more consistant.
The weekly online quizzes are good because they make me read the material on time with the lecture. If I didn't have to do the online quizzes I probably wouldn't read the book until closer to the exams. Every week is kind of alot, especially the week before this when we had the lab report due and the second exam on Friday.
The weekly quizzes were very helpful because they gave me incentive to keep up with the reading. Also, they helped me find out what I didn't know so that I could concentrate on these concepts. I didn't like the fact that some questions had multiple answers. this threw me off on some questions and I felt may have had an impact on my final grade for some quizzes. Overall though, the quizzes were very helpful and were a good way to improve my grade in the course as a whole. A good average for the online quizzes counts for 15 percent of my final grade. I found that by keeping up with the reading the quizzes were not very difficult.
Everything is great about the WebCT quiz environment... sometimes I feel like there are too many links and I got lost the first few times using it, but now I'm a pro at it! I think it might be even easier to use if it was hooked up to your bio 107 website though.
I like the fact that it is an easy grade. For the most part, they are pretty easy. Although sometimes some of the questions were a little tricky. I would like to have had the quizes count more in my average than 15%. I never had any problems with the quizes. They were always easy to acc
I like the fact that the quizzes force me to do the assigned readings. They are quite challenging, and give me a good idea what to study for the test. The time limit was annoying at times, but required me to know more of the material, rather than looking it up, therefore I knew more information of the top of my head.
The only thing i enjoy about the weekly quizzes is that it is basically improving my grade because i have all the information in front of me. Yet, i feel that more then 50% of them are way too difficult. I understand that we have a week to learn the info and the book and notes in front of us, But, i still dont understand some of the questions now. I think they are giving us harder questions just b/c it is open note book. But they are forgetting not all of us remember all the specifics after one day or so. I also dont think they realize that there is only 12 mins. I would rather have the online quizzes similar to the self online quizzes provided for us. I just dont think these quizzes are fair and helping the student.
I liked the fact that you can do it in your dorm because it is a much less sttressful enviorment and you don't have to worry about anyone looking over your shoulder and bothering you. I didn't like the fact that if your copmputer messes up that their is nothing you can do about it.
The online quizes every week seem to be a variety in difficulty, but I feel that more of them are harder in difficulty. The recent quizes have been extremely hard, and the questions were to descriptive. It is difficult to take a 12 minute quiz when the questions being asked are so long. I've done okay on most of them, but they could be a little simpler.
.I have to admit that if i didnt have to take the quizzes each week, i wouldnt be keeping up with the reading. would try to keep up, but would probably end up leaving it all to the week before the exam. and because there is so much reading, i probably wouldnt end up reading much. for this reason i am happy that i have to take them. .sometimes i like to be able to think about things a little longer, it wouldnt hurt to give 1-2 extra minutes, i know that it would have helped me because sometmes when i go bask after the quiz is over i realize i knew the answer, but i got it wrong because i was rushing. .my best suggestion would be to allow people to take the quiz anytime up to the ending date. why do we have to take them within the last 24 hours? you could, for instance, release all quizzes leading up to the first exam at once, then turn one off each wed morning as you have been doing. most people would leave them for the end anyway, but if someone wanted to, say, do them over the weekend or on a day of light work, they would have that option.
I definitely like the unline quizzes because it is 15% of our grades, but i which that we had the whole 5 days to do the quizzes.
I like the weekly quizzes because they give me a chance to review the reading material, and force me to keep up with the chapters every week. I don't like the fact that we only have a 24 hour window of time to take the quizzes, because I usually take the quiz after lecture on tuesday nights. I also think that it would be a good idea to post the answers after the quiz, so that we know what we got wrong, because otherwise we have no way of knowing the accurate information, especially considering that we were probably confused by a question if we got it wrong.
They were very difficult for me. I did the assigned reading and read over my notes all the time. However, i always got online quizes with very difficult questions on them that paid attention to very specific details. There was a lot of information to sort through and remember, and, therefor, it was difficult to do well.
I liked the quizes because then I did the readings on time and took notes on them. However I found that some of the questions on the online quized were extremely difficult to answer even with an open book. I also did not care for the time limit because I was usualy distracted with tring to finish on time instead of concentrating on my answers. The other problem was that I was not able to pause the quiz if I needed to answer the phone/ door etc.
The weekly online quiz was good for me because I think it will turn out to be a boost for my grade. The level of difficulty was challenging but not unfair. However, I did find myself 2 or 3 times in the position where I had not had time to study the material very well, or was behind in the reading and had to try cramming it in monday and tuesday night in order to take the quiz. This resulted in me taking the quiz at 10 or 11 pm at night. I think this was partially due to time management on my part but for a lot of students they simply have too many responsibilities. I know I am always swamped with work, studying, classes, and my other responsibilities. Then trying to get in sleep, down time and excercise as well...well, let's just say I know it isn't due to a lack of effort on my part. It's very frustrating when your best isn't enough.
The Webct online quizzes allow the student to read the texts and keep up on the chapters, so the student can do well on the quizzes. It allows me to stay on top of the readings, so that I don't fall behind and have to cram when the test comes around. The online quizzes, however, ask much too many specific questions that would appear on the exam. The questions should be slightly more lenient on certain topics. On the other side, asking specific questions is good, because then it challenges the student to really know and apply the material just read. I like how the students are only allotted 12 min and are allowed to take them twice in one session. This makes sure that the student read the information because it is not possible to not read the text and answer all twelve questions in the time allotted.
the online quizzes are good because they force you to keep up with the work. i have read every chapter and i took notes on all the chapters. i probably wouldn't have done that if we didn't have the quizzes. however i do study read and take notes but the quizzes are still difficult. i am planning on going to an SI session so maybe that will help. but overall i like the online quizzes because they keep me motivated to keep up with the weekly assignments
The weekly online quizzes, to me, are a waste of time. I find them confusing, difficult, and not helpful. I keep up with my readings regardless of having to take a quiz every week. I feel that these quizzes, by being so difficult are only bringing my grades down. If they were more straight forward, maybe it would help more. A lot of the questions on the quizzes are thinking questions that cannot be solved with the amount of time we are given.
Overall, I like the usage of the web for this course. I found it helpful to a certain extent. However, I was not too fond of the online quizzes; I prefer to take them during class. The computer made it more difficult to take the quizzes. Instead of focusing only on the quiz, I had to worry about timing, connection error, etc. Therefore, I had a tendency to rush through the quizzes without reading the questions and answers thoroughly. The positive side of taking the online quizzes is being able to get the results immediately. Being allowed to take quiz twice also helped out a lot. By taking the quizzes online did not exactly help me prepare for the exam because I took my online courses immediately after I read the chapter, hence the information is still fresh in my head and I did well on most them. As for the exam, they contain much more information that needed to be covered and I did not do too well on both exams. The quizzes also allowed us to use our notes which helped a lot, but when it came to the exam we werenít allow to use our books or notes and it made it much more difficult to get a good grade.
sometimes the online quizes on web-ct were overwhelming. i know that i had some trouble trying to find the time to be completely prepared for a quiz some weeks and to find the time to take it during the time period it was allowed. sometimes the quizzes were hard because we didnt get to cover all of the material on the quiz in the lectures before taking it. i think the quizzes shouldnt be taken until ALL material on them is covered in the lectures.
They are very useful for understanding the lecture. Grading is good. Sometimes it's hard, time is not enough. Overall is good.
The weekly online quizzes were at times extremely hard. It took alot of reviewing and studying to take the quizzes the second time around. Also i do like the option of the second chance to improve the grades. I also like the fact that the quizzes generate different questions each time.
I like the fact that the weekly online quizes can be taken with open book and notes, and can help you boost your grade up. I like that only 12 of 14, (or 12 of 15 for the matter of this survey) are accounted for. It allows you to not feel too incredibly bad about getting a low grade, since there is a good change it will be dropped. They also incourage you to read the text which is a much more vital part of course in taking the quizes and well, even the exams. What I do not like about the quizes is that they are given every week, and each week they seem to get more and more difficult, and sometimes, there are questions that seem to be somewhat ambiguous.
I don't like the online quizes personally because they are on my hardest day of classes. I have 5:00 am rowing practice and a class at 9. So, it's hard for me to fit them in on tuesdays but other than that I don't find too much wrong with them. They are difficult sometimes and I wish they would correspond more to the lecture notes. Some questions are tedious and I end up guessing on some. Oh, I also like the fact that I can take it twice and it will take my best grade. That's really helped out!
I like that we are able to take the weekly online quizzes twice and keep the higher grade received. I find this to be fair in that many times the first time you take a quiz does not reflect your true knowledge of the topic being tested. I also like the fact that these quizzes prepare you for the actual exam questions by exemplifying what exactly we are responsible for understanding. One thing I find to be negative about the weekly online quizzes is how they are often composed of material that has not been lectured on yet. I know the system is designed this way to keep the students ahead with the assigned readings, but I believe the quizzes would still keep the students reading in that the quiz questions reflect text material as well as lecture notes. Quiz scores would probably increase as well because the lectures on the material would increase our understanding of the material we are quizzed on each week.
I like the fact that it ensures I do the required readings so I can do well on the quizzes. I dislike the fact that I am only given 12 minutes and that some of the questions are too tricky.
I liked that the WebCT online quizzes kept me up to date with the reading. I was always where I should be with the reading, and quickly learned how to space it out, so I wasn't reading everything on Monday night or Tuesday during the day. I also liked how the quizes could be taken twice, to improve my grade. I don't really have any complaints about the online quizzes. The quizzes are helping my grade, so I can't say anything too negative about them.
i like the fact that the weekly quizzes force me to keep up to date on my weekly readings. I am forced to take notes on the neccessary chapters before taking the quizzes on tues. the only thing i would change about them is to make them worth more points and have tests count for a little less.
I found nothing wrong with the webct quizes. It kept me up on the reading. My only complaint was that at one point we were behind in the notes a bit in comparison to what we were being quized on. The quizes worked well for me and it made it so classtime was not wasted on quizes and could be used all for lecture.
The online quizzes were tricky. Sometimes the wording was weird and this often created confusion whil taking them. ALso, I flet that a lot of the questions that were asked werent particularly relevant to what we were learning. Otherwise, they motivated me to do well and to get the readings done. I like how we have 2 chances to take them and its an easy way to boost up our grade!
I liked the online quizzes because they were open book. I felt i learned the information because i didn't have to just guess. I disliked the time limit. It put a lot of pressure on you.
I really had problems with the web ct online quizzes. I FELT like I was doing so much work and then when it came down to taking the quizzes I didnt have enough time so I would find myself picking random answers last minute just so I would not get a zero for not being able to complete the quiz. I got a lot of poor grades on these quizzes and it made no sense that they would tell you what you got wrong and not tell you what the correct answer was. It's not like knowing you got something wrong is going to help you know the right answer. I think the web ct really needs to give you the correct answers and if you retake the quiz they just dont give you any of the same questions. One more thing is that sometimes you would click on the thing to grade your quiz and it would not grade the quiz and you would have to go back and find the quiz and click on it so that it got graded.
I thought they were great. I wasn't able to slack off because it forced you to do the reading each week. That made lecture more coherent and studying for the actual exams easier. I also liked being able to print out the quizzes when I was done so I could study from them later. Sometimes there were a few questions that seemed kind of vague or not so clear, and those were usually the ones I got wrong. The time was good length. It forced you to study before the quiz, but there was also enough time to look something up in case you weren't entirely sure.
I like the online quizes because they help to increase my average in the class. They help me to learn the material better. I think that the time on the exams should vary according to the difficulty of the quiz.
The weekly online quizzes do encourage the reading of the textbook, however sometimes a few of the questions are so detailed that it's hard to remember, even after reading the text. Most of the questions are more general concepts that are important to take away from the chapter, but some are not. The time limit does ensure something is actually learned and not just read out of the book, but makes the quiz more stressful and hard to concentrate on. Generally the quizzes are helpful because they give an idea of what level of knowledge and understanding is expected.
I think the weekly quizzes are somewhat difficult. I think that is good to have a way of checking to see what was learned from the reading, but I find the some of the quizzes have questions which are strictly definitional questions which are easier and some quizzes are strictly conceptual questions. I think this causes me to have an inaccurate record of what I have learned. I think that I have learned many of the concepts and definitions, but some quizzes only test for one of these and it makes it difficult to do well. I think that some people may recieve easier quizzes while others get harder and I think this is unfair because people who have equal knowledge could have vary different grades. If the quizzes were all the same and evryone had a fair chance I think that would be better. I also feel that I an never prepared for the quizzes. After doing the reading I have lecture and then straight from lecture I have to take the quiz. If I had more time to do the reading then go to lecture and then reread the concepts and then take a quiz I would be better prepared, but since I have lecture on the same day as the quiz I feel like I have to cram everything into one day.
Kids mad cheated on the web ct test. I did not want a part of it, but the general attitude i got from kids taking this course was they would all take the test together. When i took them, i suck at taking them. I would have done better if they were in class during lecture. the time limit bothered me. W/o my book W/o a time limit i would have absolutely done better. I also feel these have to big of an impact on grades.
The quizzes for me to read the book, which I probably wouldn't have done if they weren't required. They also help me to understand material more because the questions aren't all memorization, but a lot of thinking using the material. The problems I had with teh quizzes were that some of the questions were a little random, and only a very meticulous reader would pick up teh answers reading the first time through. The other problem was that I'm in the added section and I don't have the normal class schedule. I have to wait until after lecture on Tuesday (which gets out at 7:15) to study and take the quizzes, so that I get the benefit of both lectures. Making separate quizzes for our section on Wednesday of something like that would be better so that our section could get the benefits of both lectures without staying up all night taking the quiz.
The WebCT quizzes are a great source of information and review. They helped me (as well as other students) to see what kind of questions we should be prepared to answer for the exams, as well as to challenge us to think in such a fashion which would yield the highest possible grade. The convenience of being able to take two exams helped greatly, because we were able to see exactly where our vulnerabilities lied in the material being covered, and to cover these areas more completely. In addition, the quizzes offered a source of grades which would help more accurately size up each students knowledge of the material, seeing that not all students take exams well, which is not always indicative of their knowledge. The only complaint I have about the online quizzes was the occassional errors which occurred, either with the persons own computer, or the submittance of the quizzes to be graded. However, by offering two quizzes each week, these problems were overcome. Overall, I think the quizzes were perhaps the greatest asset to the students in understanding and doing well in this course.
i like the quizzes, they give me a chance to read the notes, i feel like i have to read them, so i do read them, and that prepares me a lot for the exam. i didn't do all that great on the quizzes, but i still think they were fair, even though some of them were kinda hard.
I did like that the quizzes gave me a sort of 'check point' to see how much I was comprehending. However, there were several times that lecture had not yet covered the reading material, and just reading the material did not help me to understand it. Therefore, if I didn't understand it just by reading it, my online quiz grade suffered, though I tended to understand it after lecture in the following days. I liked the WebCT environment. It was easy to use. There were a couple instances where answer choices were placed in the wrong order and I was confused about how to answer. (For example, choice 'all of the above' may have been listed for answer choice b. I found this confusing sometimes.)
The weekly online quizzes tended to be on the difficult side. They didn't really help me keep up with the reading either. Also I didn't feel that I had enought time to complete them. It was stressful watching the seconds count down as well.
The online quizzes stress me out!! I dont really like them because of the time limit. I think that if there wasnt a time limit, they wouldnt be so bad. I think that by having a scheduled time that we have to take them, and then in addition to that we have a time limit, it just causes a lot of extra unecessary stress. They have help a little to understand the material, but some of the questions, it seemed like there could be more than one answer or they were very lengthy and I didnt really want to read the entire question because I didnt want to lose any time.
I like that we able to take the quizzes online. In some of my classes we take the quiz during class and it leaves less time for learning new material. I do wish that the quizzes were not timed. I feel so pressured during the 12 minutes. I don't usually use all of the minutes but untimed quizzes would improve the class a lot. I am going to be truthful and tell you that I don't really like this class, it is one of my least favorite courses. When I took Biology my sophomore year in high school, i enjoyed the course but now I don't, I think it's because I like having an interactive class, where it is more personal and the teacher knows everyones name. I think that lectures are just one of the WORST learning enviroments.
I don't really like the fact that we have to take it in that time window. I did like that it helped me to keep up with the readings and gave me an idea of sample questions that might be on the exam. usually every wednesday i printed off the quizz that i got the lowest score on and went over and highlighted the answers. I also like that it's another opportunity to raise my grade.
I liked how easily the webct quizzes were available to us all week. I thought that the week should perhaps be monday through friday and not wednesday through wednesday. This way the quiz would be on friday and it would be more convenient and logical. Also I thought that some quizes were very easy while others were extremely hard. I viewed the quizes as a way to boost my grade and not lower it. Quiz questions were also not like test questions.
Sometimes it is difficult to pull some of the answers from the reading. Especially if you did not do the reading that morning.
The weekly online quizes were convenient and a good way to keep me up with the reading. Some of the questions were a bit hazy as to what you were asking though. But overall, i see it as a possitive activity.
The weekly online quizzes were okay to take, but I really did not want to take them. I am not sure why, but I knew that I didn't read, so I would fail them. I really didn't do that well on all of the quizzes anyway, probably because of not reading. The quizzes were not at the top of my list for this class. I didn't like them, and by taking them, I have lowered my grade for this course to a level I really do not want to see it at. I think they really brought me down. I don't think I learned a lot from them either. Not sure why!
The ONLY thing I like about the online quizzes is that is gets me to read the assigned chapters for that week. I do not find the online quizzes helpful at all. The reason I dont like them is because of the 12 minute limit. I feel it is too short of a time. I understand that you only have 50 minutes for a 45 question test so this is practice for them, but I find the quiz question really really hard and somre are too detailed that you wouldn't pick up from the readings so you have to search for the answer, but there isnt enough time. I am so stressed and worried about finishing the quiz before the time is up that I really dont learn anything and do really bad.
I like that so far, I don't have a recorded grade below a 70 on the online quizzes. .I don't like that they are supposed to be quizzes yet the answers can be so detailed. I sometimes cannot figure out an answer even after the quiz is graded no matter how long I look in the book. So, I guess I just think that the quizzes are a bit more difficult than necessary at times, but other than that, I find them pretty convenient to take and fairly graded.
I thought that the quizzes were somewhat difficult at times, but I enjoyed the grading policy. I was shocked to learn that we were allowed two chances to take the quiz, and that we were trusted without supervision. At first I was astonished at the seemingly easiness of the quiz grade, especially because we were given so many chances to get excellent grades. I only regretted not having more time to complete the quiz because some questions took more thought to answer. Fifteen minutes may have been more feasible.
I like the online quizzes on WebCT because I am familiar with WebCT and they can be taken anywhere. If I am not in my dorm room I can access WebCT from virtually any computer on campus. They also help me to keep up with other announcements and features on our WebCT website. Also, the quizzes force me to keep up with the reading. If I didn't have to take the quizzes every week I would probably fall behind with the readings, as I sometimes do in my other classes.
I thought that the idea of the weekly online quizzes coming from the Campbell chapters was very, VERY helpful! I appreciate the work that was put into that because it was for our (the students') benefit. I kept up with the work in Biology-unfortunately not with all of my other 15 credits...I do wish that all of my classes would have incorporated weekly quizzes from the text. It forced me to have to learn the material along the way rather than cramming for the exam.
They were often hard to remember to do because tuesdays were my busy days of classes, and my free time was usually spent preparing for the next class. Had they been offered for a longer time, maybe any time before the 8am deadline would have been better because then any time i had the time i could do the quiz before hand.
I like the weekly quizzes because it made me read the text and the noted on a regular basis. It also tested how much information I got from reading and pointed out the parts that I had to go over again. However, some of the questions were challenging and the answeres were too specific to find from the book or notes within a short time frame. Also some of the answer choices were similar and thus created confusion on finding the right answer. Besides this, the quizzes were the most helpful.
The weekly online quizzes are one of the most helpful tools this course has to offer. Because I want to do good on the quizzes I make sure that I do the weekly reading, every week with no exceptions. This not only helps me do good on the quizzes, but it helps me stay ahead of the game. I don't have to study as much to tests because I already know the material. If it wasn't for the quizzes I might not have done all the reading everyweek.
I thought that the quizzes themselves were accurate reflections of what we were studying. The alloted 12 minutes has been plenty of time to get it done, and I found that the only time I needed more than 5 minutes was when I needed to look back through the book or my notes for the answer. The only thing that I don't like is that the quizzes are only open for one day. I have already missed three online quizzes just because I can't remember to take them every Tuesday. Even allowing a little extra time on Wednesday morning before class, would be sufficient because that seems to be when I remember to take it, right as I wake up and get ready for class.
The quizzes are a good idea and do require you to keep up with the reading. However, they can also be more difficult then one would expect and the time is sometimes insufficient to complete the given quiz. More time would probably be the only needed adjustment for the weekly quiz.
I thought the weekly online quizzes were very helpful and often made me keep up with the reading when I probably wouldn't have. I did think that more time should have been alloted because sometimes I know the information asked but I get flustered because of the time restriction and I get a bit nervous. Other than that I think it's a good addition to the class and 15% of the class grade is adequate.
I think that the quizzes helped alot because it forced me to learn the material week by week without falling behind. They were challenging and gave a gauge as to how well i Know the material and what I needed to study more. As a whole the quizzes ar e definitely a great addidtion to the web-enhanced course.
I feel that the online quizzes are a good idea, but i feel that some of the questions are quite difficult. I feel that they help me study for the weeks chapters and I can comprehend some of the materials better. It also gives me an idea of what type of questions that may be on the exams.
One thing that I like about the weekly online quizzes is that they keep me on track with the weekly readings. I usually study for a couple of hours before taking the quizzes, even though we can use our books and notes. I find that studying before the quizzes helps me complete the quizzes faster and more efficiently. I like taking the online quizzes because i found that they help me know what i am having trouble with for the tests later on. Sometimes i do not like to take them because i feel that i have not prepared enough and do not have enough time to prepare and end up taking the quiz anyway. I also do not like the fact that we have quizzes every week because sometimes there is just so much going on, it is hard to take the time, even if it is only 12 minutes, to take the quiz.
I like everything about the online quizes. The questions seem to be fair in its level of difficulty, and if one quiz happens to be hard the second attempt seems to be easier. 12 minutes was enough in most instances but perhaps 13 minutes would be suffice. The quizes forced me to keep up with the information, but perhaps creates a false sense of security, because it is much easier to get 100s and 90s on the quizes rather than the exams.
Sometimes the quizzes were extremely difficult, no matter what material i had in front of me. Many of them had questions that were directly taken from sections that the quiz was not supposed to include. The quizzes overall werent bad and i feel they help to pull my grades up i this course.
Overall I think that the quizzes were too indepth for something that we have just learned. I think indepth questions are good for a test, but not for something we just were required to read. Also the time should be longer. Its very hard to concentrate when you only have a very limited amount of time to complete a quiz.
The quizzes were easy to find, use and access. That was no problem. I thought that the time was too short for the way that the questions were worded. The book or the on line notes do not explain or describe the answer all together and i could not remember all the specifics that a certain thing did, because they were located throughout various sections. I think i would have done a lot better if the quizzes were not timed. The SI class helped out some for the online quiz questions.
I like how we are able to chose when we want to take the quiz instead of being told to like in a class. I also like that we can use our books because it helps us learn the material better. I didnt like how it seemed like some of the questions were nowhere to be found in the text.
The online quizzes were a positive and negative experience for me. I did good on them but they took a lot of work to do good on them. I think that it was hard to concentrate on learning the material when you were rushing to make the twelve minute time limit (which was too short). I think with around 14 minutes i would have had more time to contemplate my answers. After I would take the quizzes I would check over them and realize most of the time I actually knew the answer to a question, but i just rushed because i was trying to "make time". Although, I believe that the online quizzes did help because I printed them out and studied them for the exams. So, it was a double edged sword type of deal with the online quiz environment.
I thought that the online quizes were way to hard. I would do the assigned reading and then take the quiz and I wouldn't know most of the answers to the questions. Some of the answers and questions couldn't be found in the book. After the first test I got a tutor and I would print out the quizes i would take the quizes to her and we would try to figure them out and we still had no idea what the right answers would be. My tutor is in pre-med right now.
I like that the weekly online quizzes serve as a constant reminder to keep up with the reading. However, they are also very frustrating to me because, despite the fact that I always read every assigned page, never missed a class, and study the notes before the quizzes, I am usually dissatisfied with the grade that I achieve each week. Also, I always feel as though I am being rushed. This happens on the exams, as well. I never have time to check my answers, and I always make careless errors. On the last exam, most of the questions I missed were toward the end. I feel that as I know I am running out of time, I start getting nervous and rush to finish in time. However, I think that it is very helpful that you allow us to drop the lowest 2 quiz grades and are willing to count this survey as a quiz.
The weekly online quizzes are helpful because they forced me to keep up with the reading, which I may not have done otherwise. Its very easy to fall behind in many college courses, so having weekly quizzes is an easy way to prevent this. Also, its nice to have quizzes as a part of our grade so the final grade isn't based only on a couple exams. Some of the quizzes, however, seemed a little too difficult. Since they are only weekly check-up quizzes, I would like to see questions that are a little less in-depth.
I feel like the online quizes help me keep up with and learn the material without wasting class time being tested or having the added stress of siting down and taking a written test. I think computer problems are not a big issue and you definelty allow for them with having two non-scoring quizes.
I liked how we were given a second chance to improve our grade, and I liked how we took the test at our apartment and not in class. I feel the atmosphere is more comfortable in my dorm rather than in a discussion (where we take our Chem quiz). I didn't like some questions on the quizzes. While some questions were obvious, other questions seemed as though they weren't even covered in the text. Overall though the weekly quizzes were very beneficial.
I really like the online quizes because it forces me to read the assigned readings every week. If we did not have these quizes, I most likely would not read the chapters. Also, they help me understand the material further and I always go over all the questions I get wrong. Though, you could give a little more time for the quizes, sometimes I seem to run out of timei because the questions are so long.
For the most part, the online quizzes have been helpful to me. They are not, in my opinion, a great source of testing my knowledge because often I find myself having to look up the questions in the book. After a while of studying and after the lectures are completed, I usually have a good handle on the material. However, the questions on the quizzes are sometimes more abstract and require me to search in my book and notes. The greatest thing about the online quizzes, and the reason that I would love many more of my classes to require them is that they force me to read my material. I'm sure as a sophomore in college I should have somewhat of a grasp on good time management, but I still can allow myself to slip, especially in these extremely large lecture settings, where one on one question and answers do not occur. Having to take a quiz each week on two chapters is enough of a push for me to read and learn the material, and therefore, stay on a steady track for the course. My biggest complaint is that, first I don't know if 12 minutes is really enough time for all of the questions, and more than that, the computers seem to cut you off before the 12 minutes is up on your clock. I have had at least two quizzes where my timer said I had at least 1 minute left and the quiz told me that my time was up or when I went to submit my questions, that they were not submitted because the time ran out. The first time and the second time that it happened I was on two different computers (I had no internet connection in my room for a few weeks) so I know that it is not my computer. I think it just may be a glitch in the system. That is my largest complaint because it has ended in my receiving lower grades (in one case a zero) than I deserved. However, all in all, the online quizzes have been very helpful to my academic success.
Although I am fully capable of doing timed assignments, I find that in general these timed quizzes make me more nervous. On several occasions I have finished the quiz gone back and realized that I just misread the question or made some other silly mistake. In general the quizzes frustrate me because I read all the material and do the study guides and still manage to get answers wrong. Also, I do not like how some of the material on the quiz has not yet been taught in lecture. It makes it harder to focus on certain topics when reading and harder to answer the questions on the quiz. I have no trouble, however, with WebCT. WebCT is a great resource for taking online quizzes.
I thought that the weekly online quizzes were useful in the sense that they forced me to keep up with the reading. However, they were often very diffult, even though I typically scored 90 to 100%. I was frusterated though, because I did all of the reading, did well on all of the quizzes went to every class and still managed to fail the second test. I am an honors student and I finished first in my high school class, so lack of intelligence is not a problem. There was no correlation between doing well on the quizzes and doing well on the test. That doesn't seem right. Besides keeping up with the reading, the quizzes seemed rather perfunctory.
As I said above I found some of the questions to be worded confusingly, too complicated. I thought that I would've done much, much better had I had the benefit of the lecture and lab before taking the quiz. I didn't think it was fair to give us material we hadn't had time to work with and ask questions about. The only thing that I can say that was really good about them was that they kept me up on my reading which is important. They also allowed me to see what material you were focusing on.
The weekly online quizzes helped me to read the assigned text for the week. But in many cases I found that the quizzes were very difficult and wanted you to understand the material on a deeper level. I took the quizzes associated with the chapters in the Campbell book and scored fairly high and then I would proceed to the WebCt quiz and I would not do as well as I would hope to do.
It was stressful, but I think I could keep up with the course thanks to the web quiz. I think it is a good idea to have web quiz every week. It will make students adept to the course easier, in the end.
I thought the quizzes were very easy to access and use, and once I got used to it, I didn't mind the online environment. At first it was weird, taking quizzes online, but I think I'm getting used to it. I felt the quizzes were a little difficult, but that has nothing to do with whether or not they were online. But the time constraints made me so nervous, sometimes I couldn't completely concentrate on a question and I would get it wrong.
I like that it quizzes your knowledge of the chapters you read. I also like that you can get the correct answers to the questions the next day so you can use it to study from for the exams. I don't like that you have a time limit, everyone takes different amounts of time to process information in their mind. My Pathobiology 200 class gives you a few days to do the online quiz which I feel is a better way. Though the extended time I was given seems to be ok most of the time. Thank you :)
The weekly online quizzes are fine as far as their level of difficulty and reflection of materials. I think the WebCT environment is a good place to take them because almost everyone can access the WebCT fairly easily and, as I said before, with the exception of the first couple weeks, WebCT has given me no problems as far as grading or timing. The 12-minute time limit is also fine for the quizzes.
WebCT worked very well with me, I only had problems with it once, but since you drop the lowest 2 grades I wasn't worried. The quizzes were very specific and relevant to the material assigned, which made them very hard, even for some of my friends who actually did the reading. They, however, scored higher than I did. I have definitely learned that its very important to keep up with the reading because of this class.
I really didn't like the online quizzes because it was a lot of material that I had to learn in a short amount of time. And sometimes it was tuff even when I knew the material. I thought that maybe the quizes could have perhaps focsed on one chapter at a time, so that the information could have really been learned. The quizzes however did help me to study a little harder for the exams. Because I was able to see that I didn;t know all of the information.
I found that the quizzes were much more specific than the actual exam questions. I felt that some of the questions were asking for very detailed answers that made you use time to hunt for the answer in the book even thougth i read the chapter.
I like that we had 2 chances to take the quizes. I don't like that we had only 12 minutes, that really doesn't make it "open book." I also don't like how when you press back, its starts a new quiz, i wasn't ready for. I like how it took the higher of the two quiz grades, not the average of both.
I think that sometimes the weekly online quizzes were too specific. On a few quizzes but definately not all of them, I felt alittle rushed because of the 12 minute time limit. I think the wuiz questions should be more like the exam questions that you would ask. I think there is a big difference between the questions of the quizzes and the exam questions. The quiz questions are more specific and harder then the test questions.
I felt that some of them are a little too hard, but overall they weren't that bad. I think it would be a lot easier if we had a little longer time to take the quizes, like mabye two days instead of one. I always felt rushed when taking them and not prepared. The quizes did actually help when it came to reviewing for the exams, but I just felt they were too hard. It was nice to have them, but I wish we just had to take them, but we weren't graded on them.
Most of the imformation was not covered in class so things that we didn't get from reading the text book wasn't explained and it was harder to take the quiz. Even though we could have used our books and notes to take the quiz it is still a lot of content to remember from the chapters for a 12 minute online quiz.
The webCT is good because I can access it from various different places so if I were to be in another area and needed to access the website I was still able to. It was a pretty self explanatory system as far as navigating through it. It did frustrate me once to find that my quiz was out of time and I hadn't even started it. Luckily that only happened once so I took the other quiz and used that grade. It is sometimes stressful to try and read and understand things off of a computer rather when it's on paper and you can write things on it and croos things out. So in that sense I do like regular paper quizzes better but at the same time I liked the online quizzes because there were various versions of the quizzes and you could see exactly where you went wrong when the right answers were posted.
I liked the online quizzes, they forced me to read the text from the book. The problem was it seemed that either the questions were straight out of the book or you couldn't figure the questions out. Maybe making the questions a little easier to undertsand and solve but directly out of the book. But the quizzes were positive.
The weekly online were a great way for me to keep up with the material. It really made me focus on specific concpets and current material which would be tested on the exams. The only part that I had trouble with was the pressure of reembering such a huge amount of information. Alot of different concepts were incorporated and I occasionally became comfused/overwhelmed due to the time constraint. I tend to perform below my actual capability with such a small amount of time allotted for so much information.
I enjoy the pressure of the weekly online quizzes at WebCT, being that they force me to stay on track with the class assignments. I feel that most of the quizzes were fair (so far), however some difficulties did arise. I felt that a rare number of questions were confusing and extremely challenging. I also had some minor dificulties in the WebCT environment,
