Makeup Exam?

Sept. 24, 2001

When will grades be available?

  • I should receive grades by tomorrow. I will have to create a spreadsheet, correct for various mistakes on exam score sheets, etc. Based on past experience this will take about 4 hours, and I hope to have this complete sometime Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday. Until then I have nothing to report to you.
  • Grades are not curved until the end of the course. I will post an advisory ranking with grades to show how we would have curved this exam if this were the only grade we had to use for your final grade.

No makeup for missed lab on Terrorist Tuesday

There is no opportunity for us to schedule a makeup lab for section 06 to replace the cancelled lab on Tues. Sept. 11. Rather than providing a paper-base exercise, we have decided simply to drop that week's exercise from any grading. For section 06, your lab grades will be adjusted to a schedule that is one week shorter than other sections.

How will the terrorist attacks affect our class? A message from President Austin

"A short while ago Governor Rowland directed that most State agencies be closed for the day. Commissioner Ted Anson of the Department of Public Works informed me that the Governor's order does not apply to the University.

"The regional campuses and the Law School serve commuter students and we have directed that they be closed at this time. Because the Storrs campus is largely residential, it will remain open with classes and administrative operations continuing through the day. Classes after 5:00 p.m. will be postponed. To close the Storrs campus in mid-day would be unduly disruptive to our students.

"All University activities at Storrs, the regional campuses and the Law School will resume as scheduled tomorrow.

"As I mentioned earlier, faculty are encouraged to be flexible regarding student attendance, and our student services staff is available to talk with students or other members of the community who are in need of counseling or additional information. They may be reached at 486-3426. We will communicate further as the day progresses."

    Philip E. Austin
    President

From Dr. Terry: as I read this message, it means that evening labs that begin after 5 p.m. will not meet today. We will devise an appropriate makeup activity as soon as possible. Labs that begin earlier than 5 p.m. will run to completion.

The Biology Place - Good news

OK, we're back in business. The Biology Place has special website for users of the Campbell text, with a $15 subscription rate for those of you who purchased a used copy of the text. (New text owners receive a free password). The URL to access this site is: http://www.biology.com/campbell/login.html. This is still affordable, and the value of using the Biology Place is significant, so I am going to reverse my decision of yesterday and continue to require this site as part of our course. I think you will find it very helpful and valuable in learning the course material. You do need a credit card to purchase access -- I tried going through the registration process, and did not discover a way to print out a form and mail a check instead.

An update on The Biology Place

I spent over an hour working through the phone menus, was on hold for 20 minutes, finally talked to a live human. He told me to tell students to call 1-456-0179 and use a credit card to order TPB (the same phone number I started my own 1 hour odyssey with!). He knew the web registration site was "temporarily down", but had no idea why or when it would be fixed.

I have a temporary solution. Use the following link to access a temporary password to The Biology Place that was used by instructors in a workshop. Since I have to restrict this information only to students enrolled in Biology 107, I have placed this information in a folder that requires its own password, which I will write on the board in class on Friday Sept. 6.

Access TBP password here. Userid = student, Password = (word given out in class), all lowercase.

I can't promise how long this information will give you access to The Biology Place, probably not more than a week or two. As soon as registration becomes possible, sign up for your own password, which should be $10 for 3 months (free if you bought a new copy of Campbell).

    Note taker needed

If anyone is willing to take notes on a regular basis for the benefit of handicapped students in this class, please contact Jennifer Lucia, Associate Director of the Center for Students with Disabilities, 486-2020 or e-mail at jennifer.lucia@uconn.edu. I believe there is some financial recompensation for this service.

Problems getting an account with The Biology Place

Several students reported that the "subscribe" feature of The Biology Place is currently "under repair". I have sent e-mail asking when it will be operational, and will let you know as soon as I receive a reply.

Those of you who bought a new book should not be inconvenienced. The Biology Place has a separate "college registration" portal. Use that, and type in the Activation ID and pre-assigned password that were included with your new text.

Finding current course materials - potential problems

One student e-mailed me that she could only find last year's course materials. I leave older course materials on my server account because they are used by some high school biology courses. I don't maintain these pages, and they will be out of date and irrelevant to this year's class. If you use the "Search" feature, you may find them instead of this year's materials, so be sure you're looking at the right thing.

How can you tell which is which? Look at the URL. Part of it should say "/fa01/" (short for fall 2001). If it says "fa00" or "sp00" or "fa99", you're looking at the wrong course materials.

For best results, use bookmarks once you've got the home page.

Advice and Encouragement from Former Students

I've asked some former students from this course to contribute a short letter about what happened to them "after" Biology 107, and what advice they would like to pass on to current students. I just posted the first response, and hope to add more soon. See the new "Former Students" link.

Can I overenroll? Can I switch to a different lab section?

  • Unfortunately, no.
  • Lab sections and lecture hall are filled to capacity (actually, lecture hall is slightly overfilled ). We have only one lab room available in the fall, and it is used to full capacity.
  • We are adding an extra lecture section and extra lab sections spring semester 2002 to handle the demand, and can accomodate more students (and use more convenient scheduling) because we have a second laboratory room available.
  • Note that Bio 108 and 107 can be taken in either order . If you cannot schedule the class conveniently this semester, drop it and register for spring 2002.
