Upcoming Exam #3
Our third exam is next Friday, Nov. 16, 9-9:50 a.m.
Procedures will be reviewed in class on Wed. Nov. 14. Here are some instructions:
Nov. 13, 2001
- Bring two #2 pencils with functional erasers. You will need to fill in "bubble sheets". UConn does not supply us with pencils, and rooms do not have sharpeners. If you forget your pencil, you'll have to go find one or borrow one.
- Sections 01-07 (Mon, Tues, Wed a.m. labs), take exam in Andrew Schenker (AS) 55, behind UConn Coop.
View photograph of AS 55 lecture hall
View location of AS 55 on campus map; look for label "SCHN" between Monteith (MONT) and UConn Coop (COOP)- Sections 08-13 (Wed p.m., Thurs, Fri labs), take exam in TLS 154, our regular classroom.
- It is important that I know how many people are in each room, in order to have the proper number of seats. Please do not go to the room you are not assigned to unless you ask my permission! I know TLS 154 is closer to dorms for most of you, however last exam we were almost out of exams (and seats) in TLS 154 because a number of you showed up there instead of your assigned room AS 55. This time, you must go to the proper room unless the instructor gives you permission to go to the other room. If you have another class immediately before or after ours in TLS, we should be able to accomodate you in TLS even if your assignment is AS 55, but I have to know the numbers! TAs will direct you to your assigned room if you don't have specific permission (i.e. your name is on my list) to go to the other room.
- Those with permission to take untimed exam go to TLS 309 (lab room) at 8:15 a.m. -- you will have until 9:50 a.m. This option is available to non-native English speakers for whom English language is still a challenge and who need dictionary, and to those with a medical or other qualified handicap. You must sign up with Dr. Walikonis ahead of time.
- We have only 50 minutes for the exam, large classes before and after in both rooms, so please be punctual. Latecomers will be have less time.
- We will use spaced seating, vacant seats on either side of you. Please cooperate with exam proctors to sit as directed.
- Hats with brims that cover eyes are not allowed in exams. If you wear a hat, please turn the brim facing backwards.
- Exam format will be multiple-choice, 45 questions. You should have ~ 1 minute/question. Some questions will take you only 5-10 seconds. Most of you will be able to get through the exam in about 30 minutes, so don't panic!
- You will be able to keep your exams, so feel free to make marks for your use, and check your exam against an answer key afterwards. Only answer sheets get turned in and graded.

Review Session for Exam 2
- Since I have to go to away on business Wednesday afternoon, I am scheduling a review session on Tuesday afternoon. It's OK if you come late or leave early.
Note that this is not in our usual TLS 154 room, which is unavailable at this time.
Date Tuesday, Oct. 16 Time 5:00 - 6:15 p.m. Place Physics 36

Makeup Lab Activity for Monday Lab sections 01-02
- Because of the fall holiday on Monday, Oct. 8, there is no opportunity for a regular lab meeting for sections 01 and 02. You must complete an online makeup lab activity. This activity explores cell respiration through two different online exercises. Print out the worksheets and complete them prior to your next laboratory on Oct. 15.
- Note: The only problem you may have is with the authorware plug-in. Be sure you have downloaded the correct plugin for your operating system. Windows users, choose the version that says "Authorware Web Player 6.0 - Full Plays any Authorware application, created with Authorware version 6, 5.x, 4 or 3.5." This is the 3rd one down the list of Windows installers.
- Once you get the installer correctly working, clicking on one of the source links will bring up a separate small window -- the main web page will only have a single button labeled "Back". This is not the page you want -- the materials to be examined are contained in the smaller window that pops up after some seconds. Navigate through that smaller window using the "Continue" button in the upper left corner. When you are finished with each such popup window, use the "Quit" command to return to the main browser window.

Makeup Exam?
- Those who missed the exam for acceptable reasons and have seen me, have permission to take the makeup exam next Monday, Oct. 1, 4:30 p.m. in TLS 79. Check with me to make sure you are on my list.
Sept. 24, 2001
When will grades be available?
I should receive grades by tomorrow. I will have to create a spreadsheet, correct for various mistakes on exam score sheets, etc. Based on past experience this will take about 4 hours, and I hope to have this complete sometime Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday. Until then I have nothing to report to you.
Grades are not curved until the end of the course. I will post an advisory ranking with grades to show how we would have curved this exam if this were the only grade we had to use for your final grade.

No makeup for missed lab on Terrorist Tuesday
There is no opportunity for us to schedule a makeup lab for section 06 to replace the cancelled lab on Tues. Sept. 11. Rather than providing a paper-base exercise, we have decided simply to drop that week's exercise from any grading. For section 06, your lab grades will be adjusted to a schedule that is one week shorter than other sections.

How will the terrorist attacks affect our class? A message from President Austin
"A short while ago Governor Rowland directed that most State agencies be closed for the day. Commissioner Ted Anson of the Department of Public Works informed me that the Governor's order does not apply to the University.
"The regional campuses and the Law School serve commuter students and we have directed that they be closed at this time. Because the Storrs campus is largely residential, it will remain open with classes and administrative operations continuing through the day. Classes after 5:00 p.m. will be postponed. To close the Storrs campus in mid-day would be unduly disruptive to our students.
"All University activities at Storrs, the regional campuses and the Law School will resume as scheduled tomorrow.
"As I mentioned earlier, faculty are encouraged to be flexible regarding student attendance, and our student services staff is available to talk with students or other members of the community who are in need of counseling or additional information. They may be reached at 486-3426. We will communicate further as the day progresses."
Philip E. Austin
President
From Dr. Terry: as I read this message, it means that evening labs that begin after 5 p.m. will not meet today. We will devise an appropriate makeup activity as soon as possible. Labs that begin earlier than 5 p.m. will run to completion.

The Biology Place - Good news
OK, we're back in business. The Biology Place has special website for users of the Campbell text, with a $15 subscription rate for those of you who purchased a used copy of the text. (New text owners receive a free password). The URL to access this site is: http://www.biology.com/campbell/login.html. This is still affordable, and the value of using the Biology Place is significant, so I am going to reverse my decision of yesterday and continue to require this site as part of our course. I think you will find it very helpful and valuable in learning the course material. You do need a credit card to purchase access -- I tried going through the registration process, and did not discover a way to print out a form and mail a check instead.

An update on The Biology Place
I spent over an hour working through the phone menus, was on hold for 20 minutes, finally talked to a live human. He told me to tell students to call 1-456-0179 and use a credit card to order TPB (the same phone number I started my own 1 hour odyssey with!). He knew the web registration site was "temporarily down", but had no idea why or when it would be fixed.I have a temporary solution. Use the following link to access a temporary password to The Biology Place that was used by instructors in a workshop. Since I have to restrict this information only to students enrolled in Biology 107, I have placed this information in a folder that requires its own password, which I will write on the board in class on Friday Sept. 6.
Access TBP password here. Userid = student, Password = (word given out in class), all lowercase.
I can't promise how long this information will give you access to The Biology Place, probably not more than a week or two. As soon as registration becomes possible, sign up for your own password, which should be $10 for 3 months (free if you bought a new copy of Campbell).

Note taker needed
If anyone is willing to take notes on a regular basis for the benefit of handicapped students in this class, please contact Jennifer Lucia, Associate Director of the Center for Students with Disabilities, 486-2020 or e-mail at jennifer.lucia@uconn.edu. I believe there is some financial recompensation for this service.

Problems getting an account with The Biology Place
Several students reported that the "subscribe" feature of The Biology Place is currently "under repair". I have sent e-mail asking when it will be operational, and will let you know as soon as I receive a reply.
Those of you who bought a new book should not be inconvenienced. The Biology Place has a separate "college registration" portal. Use that, and type in the Activation ID and pre-assigned password that were included with your new text.Aug. 31, 2001
Finding current course materials - potential problems
One student e-mailed me that she could only find last year's course materials. I leave older course materials on my server account because they are used by some high school biology courses. I don't maintain these pages, and they will be out of date and irrelevant to this year's class. If you use the "Search" feature, you may find them instead of this year's materials, so be sure you're looking at the right thing.
How can you tell which is which? Look at the URL. Part of it should say "/fa01/" (short for fall 2001). If it says "fa00" or "sp00" or "fa99", you're looking at the wrong course materials.
For best results, use bookmarks once you've got the home page.Aug. 31, 2001
Welcome to Biology 107

Advice and Encouragement from Former Students
I've asked some former students from this course to contribute a short letter about what happened to them "after" Biology 107, and what advice they would like to pass on to current students. I just posted the first response, and hope to add more soon. See the new "Former Students" link.

Can I overenroll? Can I switch to a different lab section?
Unfortunately, no. Lab sections and lecture hall are filled to capacity (actually, lecture hall is slightly overfilled ). We have only one lab room available in the fall, and it is used to full capacity. We are adding an extra lecture section and extra lab sections spring semester 2002 to handle the demand, and can accomodate more students (and use more convenient scheduling) because we have a second laboratory room available. Note that Bio 108 and 107 can be taken in either order . If you cannot schedule the class conveniently this semester, drop it and register for spring 2002.

Volunteers wanted for Student Management Team
If you're interested in helping to contribute to the success of this class in the following ways:then I invite you apply for one of 5 positions as student team manager for this class. Please send me an e-mail , including:
- meeting for 10-15 minutes after each Friday lecture (~ 9:55 - 10:10 a.m.)
- acting as a representative for other students in the class, so the instructor is quickly and well informed about any problems, difficulties, or sources of confusion that you or other students experience
- assisting the instructor when handouts need to be distributed or forms collected
- taking turns cleaning the board after class, so the instructor can efficiently deal with students that have questions
I will select the team to best reflect the diversity and composition of the class. Thank you for applying, and my apologies in advance to those of you I cannot fit onto the team in case I have more applicants than spaces!
- your name, intended major, and class standing (freshman, sophomore, etc.)
- your gender if it is not obvious from your name (I hope I will have both males and females on the team -- sometimes I can't tell from name alone where you belong!)
- whether you represent any special interest group (commuter, older returning student, working 20+ hours/week, etc.) -- I like my student management teams to reflect the diversity of the class
- a short paragraph explaining why you are interested in being on this team
