Use of WebCT continues to grow at UConn. Over 9,000 currently registered students have a class that uses this course management software package. Over 400 WebCT sites include over 360 Fall 2000 courses that use WebCT to enhance student learning.
Sandy Bell and Barry Sheckley in the School of Education are making extensive use of the discussion list tool creating multiple discussion lists around all aspects of their course, then archiving discussions for further student reference.
Gary Bent in Physics is using WebCTs new "image database" to store and annotate images of the ozone hole around the Arctic and Antarctic and linking these images to course content related to global warming.
New faculty Sarah Broome and Jim Sfridis are both delivering PowerPoint presentations to their students on the web to supplement in-class presentations and for future student reference.
Instructors who teach First Year Experience University Learning Skills courses and Faculty Seminars are using WebCT to introduce first year students in the effective use of technology early in their college careers. Jonathan Chin, David Ouimette and Instructional Resource Center staff created FYE class templates to give all instructors a starting point for the web portion of their class. Instructors can then customize this template to suit their instructional objectives. ULS instructors Paul Kobulnicky and Pam Heath-Johnston took pictures of their students and with these students permission, posted them to their class website, promoting active student interaction.
When faculty need support using WebCT, staff of the Instructional Resource Center are there to help. IRC staff also offer training sessions for faculty who want to learn how to use this multidimensional course management software. Attend one of the Fall Semester WebCT training sessions listed in the Institute for Teaching and Learning Fall 2000 workshop schedule, arrange for a special school or department workshop, or contact the IRC at 486-5052 to schedule an individual appointment with IRC staff.
