Dr. Hira Jain and Mrs. Sunita Jain of Glastonbury, CT have established a permanent endowment fund to provide scholarships for academically outstanding incoming or continuing undergraduate or graduate students enrolled full time at UConn. Candidates for the scholarship may but are not required to demonstrate financial need. Priority consideration, but not an absolute preference will be given to students of Asian Indian ancestry. The amount of the scholarship for this year is at least $500. The deadline for students to submit the application is February 1, 2004. The decision will be made by February 28, 2004. To apply contact the Asian American Studies Institute.

The Asian American Studies Institute sponsors the Asian Medicinal Garden which is managed by Asst. Professor Usha Palaniswamy and housed in the School of Pharmacy Greenhouse. It is a living collection of some 52 species of medicinal plants of Asian origin with the aim of supplementing teaching and creating awareness of their potential benefits. Each of the Institute's monthly publication of Purslane focuses on an herb or vegetable's properties and uses as they relate to the health practices of Asians and Asian Americans.
